New Entry to Camera Market: GE

Posted by Eric Butterfield | Tuesday, March 13, 2007 1:29 PM PT

Perhaps the oddest announcement made at PMA last week in Las Vegas was that of new cameras from GE. General Electric, the maker of appliances and lightbulbs and telephones, now has its ubiquitous logo stamped on a line of digital cameras. The actual maker of the cameras is General Imaging, which has licensed the brand name. Here's a look at the E1240:

Prices aren't final, but the eight models on display at the show are expected to cost from $149 to $399 and to hit store shelves in May.

Also at the booth was an inkjet printer called the P1 that makes 4-by-6-inch prints. The print I made from the P1 wasn't impressive: It suffered from obvious banding, as well as very jagged edges and missing details. I suspect that this may have been due to the image being of too-low a resolution, but if it wasn't, the P1 is definitely worth avoiding.
