Social Networking Sites Banned in Illinois?

Posted by Kellie Parker | Wednesday, February 14, 2007 2:55 PM PT

Do you live in Illinois and like to access social networking sites from school or a public library? Well, you may soon be out of luck.

A new bill called "The Social Networking Web Site Prohibition Act", and would require that social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace are blocked on any computer made available to the public in a plublic library, and schools must prohibit access on any computer made available to students.

Good idea? Bad idea?

The proper purpose of the government is to protect individual rights, not abridge them. Regardless of whether it is a good policy or not for each respective institution it should not be a law. As far as practically, good luck maintaining the list of sites, let alone enforcing it; as a side note this will favor newcomers and punish incumbents.

This sounds like sending your kids to the country because the cities are "evil".

Instead of creating stupid laws better to teach kids how to identify constructive stuff and destructive stuff. That requires intelligent approaches and to train kids in an art called "THINKING". This country will become crazy if the idea of "make a law for anything" is abused and some laws can become obsolete and create more problems.

This sounds like city and state institutions trying to protect themselves from costly lawsuits because parents can't be bothered to parent anymore - it's easier and more profitable to sue someone when your little girl gets raped than it is to actually involve yourself in her life to the degree that you would know who her most important MySpace friends are. There is also the seemingly forgotten art of fostering confidence, self-esteem, and a decent sense of judgement in your kids. I can't blame the state, and would vote for this w/o hesitation if I paid Illinois taxes. Case in point : http://tinyurl.com/2gdxfq
