A More Professional-Looking Photo Book

Creating a photo book online and having it printed makes for a great keepsake, though early offerings suffered from the unprofessional look of their covers. Either the cover was plain, there was a cutout that revealed a photo printed on the first page, or a photo print had been pasted onto the cover. That seems to be changing.

Recent offerings are an improvement. They allow you to add a more personalized touch--and a more professional look--to the book's cover. For example, Shutterfly's new 12-by-12-inch memory book lets you create a book cover with a photo and customized text on it. In addition, you can put text on the spine, making it easier to locate the book on a shelf. A 20-page book costs $65.

Similarly, Tabblo's new Big Book (in beta) allows you to place a photo on the cover. What I like best is that you can have the photo run from edge to edge, with your title text superimposed on top, just like some store-bought publications. It's smaller than Shutterfly's memory book, at 9.5 by 8 inches, and costs $30 for up to 40 pages.

Both Shutterfly and Tabblo also now offer little 4-by-4-inch books. These little things are cute, even if you can't get a printed cover on them. Tabblo does, however, print a slip cover with your photo on it that wraps around the book. Tabblo's minibook costs $10 for 30 pages. Shutterfly's costs $15 for up to 16 pages. [Update: As mentioned in the comments, the price for Tabblo's minibook was previously misreported.]

I think you got the pricing wrong. Tabblo lists the small books (4X4) as $9.95 on their site, and the big books are $30 for up to 40 pages, and $35 for up to 80 pages.

Ditto on the pricing. Tabblo's definitely hit the sweet spot with either one of their larger books, making the 80 pages for $35 quite a deal.

Plus, Tabblo's graphic layout is simply superior. Do yourself a favor and use the links to compare- Shutterfly's offering looks like a DIY home project in comparison.

don't forget leader, mypublisher, who the wall street journal just rated the "best" among the leading photo book makers. their new bookmaker 2.0 allows photo book creaters to make books quickly and easily and the result is a professioanally printed and bound coffee table book that looks nothing like a diy project! mypublisher.com
