PS3 and Wii: Out of the Box and into Our Lab

Posted by Danny Allen | Monday, November 13, 2006 1:11 PM PT

UPDATE: 11/18/06-9 p.m. You can now read my detailed review of the Nintendo Wii, which also includes video of the console in action. Our in-depth Sony PlayStation 3 review has video, too. Finally, our resident storage expert has taken a special look at the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray functionality and we've got a full wrap-up of all our recent console coverage here.

You want 'em and we got 'em. Just a quick post for now, as we're busy testing shipping-ready versions of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii gaming consoles (hey, someone's gotta do it).

Here's the PlayStation 3 out of the box. I should mention that the games you can see fanned out on the right (including NBA 07) aren't bundled. That said--and as I've previously mentioned--a Blu-ray disc version of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby does ship in the box and is a nice little extra.

I'm still not sure about the name, but the wee little Wii sure is cute. Better yet, a copy of Nintendo's own Wii Sports game ships free with the console. Back to Wii-style tennis, golf, baseball, bowling and boxing for me.

Check back soon for our full review of both consoles, including a look at the Playstation 3's Blu-ray movie playback capabilities.

Great pix guys. I'm stunned! I didn't know the Wii was white or that the PS3 didn't come with 3 games! Golly gosh goodness!

Okay but seriously. The PS3 is way too expensive.

I play the Wii last week at a friend's house who somehow gotone of these things. It's a real winner. Adults can actually play. No longer needed are small nimble fingers. I used to be a PC gamer but retired some six years ago. Everythng became too complicated to control action games except racing if you had the wheel.

Anyway, the Wii is going to be a big winner. The graphics were pretty good on the Samsung 56in DLP conected with the componet cables. I have seen the Xbox 360 and it has great graphics but is complicated for ordinary people. This little thing is a real game machine. The xbox and the ps3 are just overkill except the dedicated nuts. Ordinary people will buy the Wii.

I agree with the first comment. Well, except for one thing;
Before reading the article, I hadn't a clue that the end user had to actually open the box to preview whats inside. No wonder my XBox 360 is so complicated and never seems to boot.

Im sure that there is a second part to this article that PC WORLD has forgot to upload. But then again, thanks for confirming what the products look like outside the box.

To all above ID10Ts..
Which part of "Just a quick post for now. We're busy testing" at the beginning of the article and "Check back soon for full review" didn't you guys understand? PCworld did a good thing by posting a preview of what's coming for their readers for this is a very hot topic.

If I could interrupt your physics lecture for a moment, I'd like to point out that if it is, in fact, a "hot topic", wouldn't you think that there would be something say... "hot" about the information provided?
Thanks to your correction, I now understand that I was reading (to put it in editorial terms) "fluff". Important Hot fluff. Much like the fluff which comprises 70% or more of all toe jam.
Go back to your "Turbo Commodore" project in your garage.

to nitpick, it's actually called a tease, and it's used for two reasons - 1, to pull people back to the site daily, sometimes even hourly, to see the next article, thereby generating more hits, thus more revenue from advertisers, and 2, to generate more feedback posts like these - a lot of companies base their web department's budget partially on cust. feedback/use - the more posts on the forums, the larger the budget. so quit whining, it's just an aspect of journalism in a free market economy. don't like it, move to china

"it's just an aspect of journalism in a free market economy. don't like it, move to china"

Now that's interesting: only one problem...some parts of China offer a free market economy. So to suggest going to China may actually be a misnomer. You may instead suggest mainland China, but soon that won't work either.

Hmmm...here's a thought: journalists suck! Yeah...that works! If you have something important to say, then say it. To me, this "article" is a non-article. You can call it fluff, a teaser, or toejam...it doesn't matter to me. As far as I can see, this is just like those stupid "Breaking News Alerts" that the tv media puts on that 1) isn't breaking at 6pm when the damn thing happened at 8pm the previous night, and 2) shouldn't be even worthy of being called news (sorry, the fact that some idiots are showing captive panda bears porn, to me, is NOT NEWS!). With that said, I've alredy reserved my new PS3 via my managerial friend at the local Best Buy.
