Toshiba's New Portable Video Player

Posted by Danny Allen | Friday, September 15, 2006 6:09 AM PT

Okay, so Toshiba's biggest news at this year's CEDIA show is probably its second generation HD DVD set-top players: the $1000 HD-AX2 (its first with 1080p support) and the $500 HD-A2 (supporting 1080i). For more details on these devices, you can read our news story here.

However, Toshiba also has some other new goodies on show, including the Gigabeat MEV30K V-Series portable video player, first announced on September 1. Adding to its existing S Series portable media players, this unit has a 3.5-inch display (320 by 240 resolution), 30GB hard disk, built-in speaker, TV-output and the company claims it provides up to 8 hours of continuous video viewing or 30 hours of audio playback.

The MEV30K runs Microsoft's Portable Media Center Version 2.0 software and supports MP3, WMA, WMA lossless and WAV audio files. It's also compatible with Vongo movie downloads and windows DRM music subscription services such as eMusic, Rhapsody and Napster. We're told it'll set you back a cool $400 when available in October.
