As
we expected, Motorola is finally announcing the availability of its long-anticipated
Q smart phone. On Monday, Motorola and Verizon announced that the Q will be available through the Verizon Wireless Web site beginning May 31 and in retail stores next month. The Q will cost $299.99 with a two-year contract from Verizon Wireless, but a $100 instant credit is available when the phone is purchased with a "qualified" voice and data plan, today's announcement says.
The Q, which is being billed as "the world's thinnest QWERTY device", runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 OS and supports Verizon's BroadbandAccess network for high-speed access. According to today's announcement, it includes Outlook Mobile and offers Wireless Sync for instant access to e-mail, calendar, and contacts. It also supports Yahoo and Hotmail e-mail, and allows access to instant messaging apps.
In addition to its phone and messaging capabilities, the Motorola Q offers music and video playback via Windows Media Player Mobile.
Stay tuned for our review of the Motorola Q.
I want one!!!
I'd like one with a built-in TTY functionality (TTY stands for teletypewriter and it's for the deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech impairement).
For hearing and speech impaired and when it comes to cell phones, I don't want to carry an external TTY with a cell phone like when traveling to theme parks, go to restruants, etc.
Sometime soon, I'd like to see cell phone manufacturers implement TTY software functionality into cell phones with QWERTY for deaf--no I'm not talking about switching from Voice to TTY and hooking up an external TTY, but I'm talking about a software that should be built-in to a cell phone with a QWERTY keyboard. But those with no hearing problems, I don't think that manufacturers will put a TTY software into cell phones as each of the numbers have 3 letters except 7 and 9, which have 4 letters.
OOH!!!! I WANT ONE!!!! I thought the price was supposed to be north of $500 though... *cough* PCWORLD *cough*
I would love one BUT wouldn't it cost around $70 or more a month for the usage of email, etc.???
The MPX was Motorola's only Windows Mobile device and it has been over a year since Motorola has shipped any. They left me and a lot of other MPX220 customers holding the bag while other mfgs have gotten much more experience with the platform.
The heart of the MS Mobile market is professionals and technology folks who need to stay in touch with their offices, calendars, contacts, and want it all in a readable, easy to device that is also an excellent phone. These folks are familiar with the care and feeding of a sofisticated device. But Motorola sold much of the MPX into a market that was experienced with more simple and reliable Nokias etc. Many of these customers couldn't understand or appreciate the differences, i.e., why the phone's clock didn't automatically change whenever they crossed between time zones, and they were very unsympathetic to the modest volume level of the speakerphone. People for whom the "cameraphone" feature was important were also underwhelmed by the limited capability of the MPX.
Given Motorola's less than stellar history with the MS Mobile platform, I'll hold off on the Q and see what the competition has planned for the next few months. I will be looking at the Cingular 8125, new Treo and expect to see new models from HP and other mfgs this Summer/Fall.
My response to Grayson Peddie:
Grayson, it appears that you could benefit more from a grammar and composition utility. Your comments were difficult to read.
The screen looks pretty small compared to the Starcomm/Audiovox VX 6700. And one has to suppose that Verizon will cripple it just as they do other advanced phones to squeeze more money out of us customers. I would be very surprised if its EVDO capability could be used to serve as a modem for a notebook PC.
And like all thumbboard makers they seem to follow the herd in perpetuating the QWERTY keyboard which is absolutely stupid since one has to learn a new way of typing anyway with thumbs, so why not with the much more efficient Dvorak layout? I'll take Graffiti over that lameness any day.

what is lengthxwidthxthickness of motorola Q
This model is great!!!! BUT sadly for the deaf person, wouldn't it cost around $70 or more a month for the usage of email, etc.??? For example: the deaf person(s) has never used a voice and use emails and text messages a lot.
