Sony has finally spilled the news: PlayStation 3 will ship November 17 in the U.S. priced at $499 for the version with a 20GB hard drive, $599 for a 60GB hard drive.
The video--shot and edited by PCW's Danny Allen--is now hosted on Google Video and is working a treat, so take a look and let us know what you think!
Our commentary from Monday: Sony's announcement came here at
E3, where Sony Computer Entertainment built
PlayStation 3 suspense for more than an hour at its opening-day event, held at Stage 15 at the Sony Pictures lot in L.A.
"PS3 is not an incremental upgrade," Sony Computer Entertainment America President Kaz Hirai assured the eager crowd."PS3 is the most ambitious project we've undertaken."
One of the more interesting announcements from this afternoon's event: Sony introduced the final design for its
PS3 game controller. The new controller looks familiar in shape and size, but it's lighter, and it uses Bluetooth wireless technology in lieu of wires. The twist: Inside, it has 3D accelerometers and motion sensors to translate your physical motions with the controller to your actions on screen, essentially turning static mechanics into kinetic mechanics.
The controller has six degrees of freedom: It can maneuver through the X, Y, and Z axis, so you can rotate, pitch, and roll through most all aspects of gameplay. Sony demonstrated the controller on the game Warhawk.
Other news: Two new titles for PS3: First, from Sony Computer Entertainment's London studios comes Eight Days. Sony showed a lively video clip of a shootup by a roadside caf?, but offered few plot details. Next on deck was Naughty Dog, another testosterone-heavy romp, this time in a jungle adventure. While the lead character's movements in this short clip show how far graphics in games has come, well, I don't think Hollywood's actors have much to fear...yet.
It's interesting to note that the PlayStation 2 is not dead. More than 200 new titles are coming for that console before the end of the year, with nearly 20 expected to be introduced here at E3.
I doubt the high price will sway gamers away from the graphical detail of PS3, although Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be a contender with its significantly lower price tag and almost identical features
Everyday I become more interested in Wii. Plus I'm a PC Gamer...PC trumps consoles in almost evey category...lol don't even get me started,
As soon as I found out about the "reductions", I wanted to post my own blog stating what a ripoff it all is. NO HDMI, No WiFi, No 1080p? As well as NO dual HDMI, No Tri-Ethernet. You've be out of your mind. Sony should have swallowed the extra 800 million and released a single console version with all the features.
I called around after the show to see about Pre-Ordering the PS3. Now I don't need to bother. I'll be getting a Wii to enjoy with my kids this Fall. No, I take that back, I'm going to buy a Wii and two DSlites for my sons and I. It'll still be less than the PS3.
I'll wait to buy the PS3 until the price on the Decent 599 version drops to something like $299. If I need next-gen that badly, I'll get the Xbox 360 which I never would have considered before today.
Bottom line, the system Sony announced last year was worth $499 to me. The system they are actually selling is stripped down, and still costs $599. Sony should be selling the $599 system for $399 to compete with Xbox 360. It's simply not $200 dollars better than the Xbox 360.
Sony is greedy and does not realise that this price will likely cost them the console wars and the Blu-Ray war. I know it cost them my business for now.
MrFezzywig - Now breathe!!!
HAHAHAHA....sony out-Wii'd the Wii.....
Even though I *STILL* think the idea of that type of controller is dumb.
gotta think of the wireless bluetooth and the blu-ray technology that it's going to come with.
Don't forget that the $399 X-Box doesn't come with a HDD.
are u sure about the strip down MrFezzywig?, beacuse there's no news about the PS3 been striped down. It still has all that was said will have.
Is the extra 40gb hd worth 100 bucks?
LOL...
This is a joke. Sony paid way too much money to develop the cpu alone, only for it to perform around the same marks as the 360. Totally a joke.
Now, every PS2 owner will have to fork out the money to keep playing on this platform because we all know Sony will kill PS2 game production in order to recover their financial losses.
20 years ago, Sony was on top. Now, they're just money-blundering IDIOTS... ROFLMAO
I didnt even know that sony was producing much of anything in 1986 (video game wise).
Long live Microsoft. XBox 360 forever. With the announcement of Halo3 @ E3 2006, Sony is toast
Yes, I am sure about the strip down, the specs were released on Sony's website.
Sony are soo trying to rip off Nintndo with the motion sensitive controller. It just seems a shame that they aren't bringing anything new to the console wars. Although I do think that graphics can make a good game better that is all they seem to have with the PS3 (I know the motion sensitive is there but it won't be focused on as much as the Nintendo Wii's motion sensitivity).
dude.... i dont think anyone cares about Halo anymore. Haha, I sure don't. Ill hold out for a real quality FPS (even tho most FPS games are lame now) like the upcoming PS3 Killzone.
... Halo 3 taking down an entire console... haha good one. The moment that happens is the moment my third leg turns into solid platinum.
lmfao
prognosis: donkey kong will kill xbox, wii and ps3 together. they're toast.
PS3 is a joke now. Its overpriced for the minimal gains.
Xbox 360 is going to take the crown, if it hasn't already. PS2 lovers and soon to be PS3 lovers this may come as a shock, but the PS3 is a JOKE!
With the release of Halo 3 its over for Sony. Microsoft can allow to slash prices for the XBOX 360. Sony can't do the same.
What's interesting is right now the XBOX 360 has costed Microsoft $141 million in second quarter earning. But yet Microsoft has made it back up, and then some with SQL Server.
PS2 and PS3 lovers, what do you have to say now?
