Entertainment Extra: E3 Is Almost Here!

Posted by Danny Allen | Friday, May 05, 2006 7:30 PM PT

The 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) kicks off next week, and as in previous years, there's sure to be loads of juicy details on the latest consoles and games even before the show floor officially opens on Wednesday. PC World will be posting news as it comes live from the likely-chaotic Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft pre-show events, so be sure to check back often.

Nintendo's unveiling of its new Revolution/Wii console may be the hot ticket this year, but expectations are high surrounding impending announcements from Sony and Microsoft, too. Will Sony confirm pricing and availability for the now delayed PlayStation 3? Will we actually get to test drive hot upcoming titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 or Motor Storm? Personally, I'm wondering if we'll get to try the next generation Eye-toy or see previews of the next Grand Theft Auto title or even Guitar Hero 2.

Our resident storage maven, senior associate editor Melissa Perenson, will also be on hand to investigate the PS3's use of high-capacity Blu-ray discs and how its implementation compares to Microsoft's possible announcement of a HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360. One thing is for sure: High Definition gaming is sure to be a buzz area this year. Microsoft is also widely expected to show a trailer for Halo 3 (at the very least) and there's a lot of interest in 360 titles such as Gears of War, Crackdown, F.E.A.R and Prey.

PC gaming is far from dead and to that end, Microsoft is also expected to discuss gaming on Windows Vista. Although we expect to bring you a hardware news from a slew of PC vendors attending E3, we'll also be doing our best to try out highly anticipated PC games such as Spore, Battlefield 2142, Prey, Call of Duty 3, Unreal Tournament 2007 and Command & Conquer 3.

We'll also be looking at trends such as in-game advertising and the latest in Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs).

E3 is almost here: What would you like to know more about?

What I wanna know is if the RP is ever gonna return to mmorpg's??? Of late game companies seem determined to kill RP content through the use of "new and improved gameplay". Are all the new ones coming in as mmo play it their way or forget it?

I'm definitely looking forward to some kind of announcement from Bungie. All the internet rumors surruonding their next project are starting to get quite old.

Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy (V, VI, III, XII, and VII: Crisis Core). And of course all of the secret crap the big N and S have been hoarding for the show. M$ as a gaming system can suck my (insert creatively phrased expletive here)

Not too excited this year. I already have my 360....i'm only mildly interested in PS3, and the Wii looks absolutely terrible. Just want to see what new stuff is coming to 360.

Although I don't know whether PS3 or XBOX 360 will win 1st place in sales, I am completely convinced that the Wii will come in second if not first, so I am hoping to hear Wii news that will bring Nintendo well deservered respect on this new system.

Who cares about PC gaming? Please tell me why some idiot would go pay $500.00 for a graphics card to play the latest PC game when they can get a whole gaming system for under $400.00 that has total immersion gaming where you don't have to worry about some guy in Alabama lagging your game with a dialup connection!
