SageTV PVR Software Adds Placeshifting

Posted by Eric Butterfield | Tuesday, April 25, 2006 9:47 AM PT

4/27/06--SageTV announced two days ago that version 5.0 of its Media Center PVR software now does placeshifting, so you can access the TV shows you watch at home from a laptop or PC in a faraway place. Previously, I incorrectly described the new feature as timeshifting. This post corrects that misunderstanding.

According to SageTV, the software offers smoother placeshifting than having a separate placeshifting box connected to a PVR. The feature, which also works with music and photos, is available as a $30 add-on to Windows and Linux OEM editions of the software.

Have you been aching to enjoy the shows and music you enjoy at home while in a hotel on a business trip? Would you try this software over a Slingbox?

I don't think you mean TiVo-esque. I think you mean Orb- or Slingbox-esque as TiVo doesn't have place shifting features. SageTV has always had DVR/PVR features - that's what it is.

Wow. Has anyone tried it? Does it go smoothly?

I tried it and the video quality is the best I've seen. Price was better than Slingbox and provides DVR and Slingbox in one.
