Dell Takes Orders For Overclocked, Quad-SLI System

The embargo on final details for Dell's XPS 600 Renegade gaming system (which we first saw at CES) has lifted, so we're now able to give you the latest on this limited edition collectors system that comes hand painted and signed by Michael Lavallee.

Dell has today begun taking orders for the machine bundled with its 3007WFP 30-inch flat panel monitor, but be prepared for the fiery system to burn a hole in your hip pocket. The starting price: $9930.

So what level of gaming glory does ten grand get you? Well, the XPS 600 Renegade will feature an Intel Pentium 965 Extreme Edition dual-core processor that's been overclocked from 3.46GHz to 4.26GHz (and warranted by Dell for a year). It's also Dell's first PC equipped with Quad-SLI technology (four nVidia GeForce 7900 GPUs, for a total of 2GB graphics memory) which should enable high-frame rate, high-definition gaming at resolutions up to 2560 by 1600. Further high-end components include 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM, two hard disks (a 400GB 7200-RPM drive and 160GB 10,000-RPM Raptor drive) plus a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card with front drive bay module.

The system can also include an Ageia PhysX processor card capable of improving environment interactions and overall realism in supported games such as Epic's upcoming Unreal 3. Incidentally, Epic will be showcasing the new graphics engine for this game at the Games Developer Conference this week using the Renegade system.

So, gamers: would you spend $10K on a new PC? Have you done so before? It's certainly an interesting move from Dell, especially considering the recent rumors that it might be buying Alienware, which it competes with in the tricked out, boutique PC market. Let us know what you think.

OMBMFGD CRAZY!!!!!!!

Intel is a BIG MORON for going with Intel!!!

I'm sorry but I'm a BIG AMD fanboy...Geez...

Intel doesn't develop a fully-fledged 64-bit processor. Only AMD does.

That case must have a water-cooling system!

What kind of case is it? Aluminum? Whew...

Oh, man...

Oh boy! This is insane. I was stunned by looking at that case. It is like a soldier ion that would burn my upper part of my leg...Ouch!!!

(sigh...)

Whew...time for me for some water... I felt like I'm making a lot of typos in my post since I'm typing fast, using too many backspaces... Not that I'm in hurry but it's just shocking to see that price! Good g*d Dell!

Well I'll not be buying that computer! Gamers and geeks like me would build a computer by myself!

Whew... Gotta calm myself down. :p

Dell hides 3 of the most important facts when it comes to a complete system. Who made the GeForce 7900 GPUs? Who made the mother boaed? Who made the Ram?

Dell Sells a lot of Computers and makes a lot of money.. Even when they sell a laptop for 399.99. Hope they keep selling them cuz it gives us things to fix.

I have a dispute with Ladiesman. yes, I am a huge techie, but I will have you know the AMD outclasses Intel in every aspect, which is why Dell decided it would be in the best interest of the company to buy a company like Alienware. AMD has a better performance, and is far more reliable than Intel ever dreamed of. However, this is bad news for AMD enthusiasts, especially those that like the company Alienware. I also build my own systems, and there is no way on this Goddess' Green Earth that I would spend that kind of money on a frigging computer. Rev John, ATI builds the Gforce 7900GPU, Dell made the board, and more than likely, Kingston supplied the RAM.

OK, I have to make a correction here of my own post...nVIDIA makes the GeForce 7900 GPU, but Dell still made the system board and Kingston supplied the DDR2 RAM.

Thenatos: Ok, i'll admit AMD processors are more efficient. But really, is it a big deal? I meant they are just as good in more of an general sense. AMD doesn't blow Intel away. AMD is slightly better. It's like one car having 200 horsepower....and another having 205. It's not really a big deal, and a HUGE amount of the buying public couldn't tell the difference.

In the case of Dell, Intel is still the right decision. Would you rather pay more for a slight increase in processor performance, or pay less for something just about as good? (assuming you didn't build your computers)

I can't figure out what all the hassle is all about !! Dell has never used anything but Intel CPUs ... why do some think Michael Dell is going to change now ??
