Windows Vista Pushed Back to 2007

Posted by Anne B. McDonald | Tuesday, March 21, 2006 3:05 PM PT

Elizabeth Montalbano, of IDG News Service, tells us that Microsoft has decided to push the availability of Windows Vista until January of 2007.

This came in an announcement from Microsoft Co-President of the Platform and Services Division Jim Allchin.

Microsoft, however, plans to release Vista to business partners through its volume licensing program in November 2006, Allchin said in a conference call today.

In an interview earlier this year, Allchin said he would delay releasing Vista if the OS did not reach a standard of quality with which he was comfortable. In today's conference call, he said that Microsoft wanted to give customers a firm date for when the company could deliver Vista broadly, and so decided to push back the release to January of next year.

Ahh......no big deal. I'll just wait until Junurary.

Just take your time. I'm very patient with Microsoft.

How many Versions Apple launched of its OS in the past 3 years, on top of all the new products they launch each quarter?

Am I the only one who noticed with irony the reason for the delayed release being Microsoft's concern that the current version of Vista "did not reach a standard of quality" they were comfortable with. Hmm, must be a flexible definition of "quality."

Linux is no longer a hobyist OS.. You would be surprised to know that most of the webpages you view, come off of linux webservers. Most of the email you read, comes from linux mailservers. Not to mention a host of other services that you use daily, are all mostly run on linux.

So they're unsure of the quality and will delay the release for consumers till Jan 07.....

But businesses will be A-OK with a shoddy release?!

Vista is XP w/ toys most consumers have no need for and will never use. After a month you'll get over the fact that you can turn your screens sideways.

Oh, and I tried to install the beta on my relatively new laptop and after the 4 hour installation, and it crashed. It has a LONG ways to go.

I'm disappointed, but can understand the reason. I'm excited for Windows Vista to debut because it will encourage the use of new Web features to the masses. Let's face it, some 80% of the systems out there run Windows, and they do so because its reliable and easy to use.

As far as Linux running "most" of the email and Web servers, uhem. Nice stats. But only super-geeks and super-big companies really run these, the reason is that they are more difficult than a Windows server to keep-up.

Again, I'm disappointed for the delay, but will excited to upgrade when the opportunity arises.

ok so "quality" i can see is their reason to delay till january but they already cut out avalon and winfs and efi.....avalon and winfs were supposed to be revolutionary.....now vista is more evolutionary than revolutionary. I am going with a macbook pro with mac osx leopard when it comes out. (thinkpad x41) and mac(ibook) user....however my thinkpad is getting really dusty. Macs just plain deliver....unlike microsoft.)

Goodness! So Vista won't ship in 2006, but in 2007; this is a delay of a couple MONTHS, not a whole year. A delay like this doesn't mean bad tidings for Windows, and I can guarantee it won't make a bubble in Mac market share either (dream on if you think so). Macs are great, but you will have to relearn some things so you'd better wait until you get to test your savvy, if you even follow through on the "threat" to switch (most of you won't). Besides, Macs. tiny, expensive market share they have, are beginning to show their armor chinks too, so don't over-assume that the pastures are greener.
Frankly, my biggest disappointment with Vista is not this relatively trivial delay, but some of the forward-thinking features that MS has decided to back off on. I can wait a month or two or three, so it doesn't bother me at all that it's going to be delayed.

Anyone who jumps straight into a new operating system the day of release is treading dangerous water in my books, since most companies cannot it seems be bothered to really release software that is not still beta grade and therefore use the consumer as a continued beta tester under the misnomer of "final release" I'll wait a good while I think to see the fall out settle before I upgrade, I mean look how long its taken M$ to try and get xp working properly?!

o well. another delay. no different then all the other delays. did u know that Vista was originally supposed to be released in the holiday season of 2004!?!? anyway, i agree with other posters, i ain't getting Vista atleast until all the first serice pack comes out. i didn't switch from W2k to XP until SP2 and it saved me a lot of trouble. my next comp is going to be a MacTel in which i can use XP too. no need for vista. it'll suck as it's a complete copy of Mac OS X anyways.

A mathematician friend is beta testing it - base install 6Gb, in his words "WTF?!?"

An OS is a layer between the hardware and app, so what is all this 'multimedia experience' cr*p? As a professional animator I don't need any of it and I always switch all theat rubbish off.

Further, all the extra clock cycles use electricity, so bloatware is killing the planet too - how many million computers will run this?

Linux may be a little harder to learn, but it's a ton more powerful and less system hogging than the latest stuff microsoft's been putting out lately... I still think the last *good* windows OS was 98 #2... every release they take more and more freedom away to keep the average user safe, and every release they keep bloating up the code. I'm glad Vista's going to be using majority new code to get rid of a lot of the junk that's built up so far, but honestly, when it comes to making *a computer* into *your computer*, getting rid of all the stuff you don't use, and optimizing your system for everything you do... Linux is the way to go. Especially Gentoo. ALL PRAISE GENTOO!

As far as a windows system goes... they're flashy and just work. That's what they're about, and I'll keep one on for those times when I need the compatability or *just workiness* of windows. Otherwise, my comp just works better on something else :D

Hmmm... Did any of you guys who posted a comment actually READ and UNDERSTAND it completely?

Windows Vista will STILL BE RELEASED IN NOVEMEBER 2006... FOR BUSINESSES!! Windows Vista Home Edition is the only one that will be delayed until January. So, if you're planning on using the Windows Vista Professional Edition (or whatever they're calling it) then it's obvious that this little news release is meaningless to you. If you are planning on using the Windows Vista Home Edition then wait the extra two months. If you've gotten along so far with Windows XP SP2 then I'm confident enough in you that you'll survive until Jan 2007.

Now, for all those threatening to switch to an Apple or Linux OS then how about this... I CHALLENGE YOU to go out right now and buy an Apple computer or a copy of Linux and wipe out your current Windows XP PC. If it's SOOOOO much better than any Microsoft OS, then stop being stupid/dumb and STOP GIVING MS YOUR MONEY! Give it to Apple and Linux instead! They need your financial support more than your false promises and threats. But you'll have to also dump your MS OS as well, because only an idiot would actually use and support such a bad product, wouldn't you all agree? I mean, if you went to the most expensive restuarnt in town and the food sucked, you wouldn't keep on going there wasting your money on a crappy dinner, would you?

Lastly, this is for everyone, but specifically to IdahoBoy... You USED to be 100% when you said:

"As far as Linux running "most" of the email and Web servers, uhem. Nice stats. But only super-geeks and super-big companies really run these, the reason is that they are more difficult than a Windows server to keep-up."

Well, the #1 ISP in the world has just dumped all of their Linux/Unix servers in favor of Windows 2003 Server... GoDaddy.com

You know... I'd like to make another challenge to all those Pro Linux/Apple/Other zealots who are also Anti Microsoft complainers...

Why don't you list all of the things that Linux/OS X/etc. can do that Windows cannot do. Oh, I KNOW you've already listed a thousand things in your minds already before you finished reading my challenge, but let me explain what you failed to comprehend first...

First, name something specific that is EXCLUSIVE to your OS of choice.

"It loads faster" is NOT something exclusive to Linux because (A) You don't have your own independantly audited benchmarks proving your claim and (B) It's something that different based on numerous other factors (Hardware for example).

"It's more secure!" is NOT something exclusive to your OS because (A) A Windows 2003 Server with a 12 character alpha-numeric password requirement for all user accounts is more secure than ANY Linux box with a blank Root password (I'm not sure if they still allow blank Root passwords in Linux but you get the point) (B) When all those credit card numbers and SSN numbers were stolen from major banks and companies the last couple of years, they WEREN'T using Microsoft Windows... They were using Linux/Unix and (C) Linux is the MOST HACKED OS in the WORLD. Don't argue please... I have the information to back it up. More Linux boxes are hacked than ANY OTHER OS.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. List ALL of the only functionality that MS OS'es CANNOT DO! I don't mean can do it BETTER or do it WORSE... I mean IT CAN ONLY DO IT!! Good luck!
