Note: An editorial change was made post publication.
Microsoft posted its first consumer beta, second non-internal beta overall, of Windows OneCare Live yesterday at its
Windows Live Ideas Web page. OneCare is an umbrella of PC utilities, backup tools, security components, and tech support options available to Windows users on a subscription basis.
New features in beta II include backups to external hard drives, the ability to enable right-click scans of files and folders, integration with Microsoft Update, and diagnosis upon installation of potential software conflicts with Windows OneCare.
Dennis Bonsall, a Microsoft group product manager, walked me through a quick Web demo today. The security components I saw did look easy to use. My pet peeve is when a security product flags a possible piece of malware but doesn't give you enough information to make a decision on what to do about it.
OneCare's firewall, for example, helps with that, giving you easy-to-read publisher, location, company, and version numbers of executables it doesn't recognize. OneCare's firewall is both an inbound and outbound firewall.
Microsoft is spinning OneCare as one-stop shopping for people who don't want to manage their own security and utility programs and who are willing to pay for someone else to do it. As a result, the bar is set high for Microsoft to create a product with few bugs and with responsive tech support.
For this crowd, I also think the bar is set high for Microsoft's OneCare to be more effective and easier to use than the security-package trials--such as Symantec's--already installed on many PCs.
I haven't tested the beta yet. Have you? Tell us your thoughts.
microsoft is teh suck. they are just covering their arse for future windows vista deficiencies.
I installed the beta yesterday. The installation was flawless. It detected that I had Norton Anti-Virus installed and prompted me to uninstall. (In a nice touch it even provided a link which opened the Add/Remove programs dialog). I haven't had a chance to test all of the features yet, but the ones I did seemed to work very nicely.
microsoft rocks, i love waht they are doing and am keeping up with all their betas and new software releases... this is no exception, great work
google, yahoo, ebay, and amazon run linux...they suck
I installed. It's seamless and easy. Somehow the Norton upgrade managed to bug up Norton antivirus '04 already on my system, and rather than keep me as a customer Norton techies insisted I upgrade to the newest Norton '06 for $39 more. Needless to say, I'm using Microsoft now. I'll certainly recommend to my customers they use Microsoft too. As long as Microsoft keeps the punks, and the government out of the users desktop, computer usage will grow, and prosper.
rcp
The pattern of invasion starts again. *sigh* Oh well. It's a realy nice busness concept.
Why dosn't everyone that use a computer just face facts, Microsoft won't be happy until you're a thing client on their new MSInternet(TM) and you're paying them half your wage to use it.
I've been using it for months and it's not bad...all in one which cuts down on the clutter. The only con I find is the fee. Microsoft should offer it for free as it is their duty to protect their consumers.
Stop the MS bashing... and actually test the BetaII release and give an opinion.
This is a great thing for 90% of us
Think about it
I tired, but got this message:
"Wow, we must have really messed up and are currently down. Please come back later."
Is that the web version of the BSOD (Computer crashing for all your folk that think this is cool).
It installed quickly and is functioning well. It did not ask me to uninstall AVG Free. One thing distinctly changed. The web sites are loading very slow. It was lightning quick before I installed Oncare Live. May be because I use Firefox browser. May be it is a bug in Onecare.
I install3ed the beta and iy works well with my computer. I rewally like it. I will use Windos OneCare forever even when the final release comes out.
I got as far as the download button, but I couldn't open it. I sent an e-mail back decribing the problem but I have not heard back yet.
Gah..I think you guys(PC World staff or whoever) should first make a system where people have to login to post comments and can't use addresses such as hotmail for quick little spam accounts.
/semi-rant.
The Windows OneCare Beta as far as I can tell with my few hours of use so far, is excellent. The GUI is nice to the eyes, the virus scanning is a tad slow, but it's good. The Tune-up feature is cool, they just need to add a registry scanner/cleaner. Ah and I can't forget the 2 way firewall, which in my opinion, is not only easy as can be and so far works wonderful. So far I believe the only sad thing is, is that this product will have to be paid for. It would have went well for them to offer it for free like they've done with Microsoft Antispyware(Windows Defender).
I also think MS should make this free for everyone since there OS is targeted so much.
Personally I don't understand why everyone doesn't use linux. It has most or all the software you need to protect your box.
But as far as this onecare thing....to me it seems like the same stuff MS has always put out...just packaged differently...kind of like a pasafier for MS babies.
Sorry to be amongst the M$bashers, but they should FIX THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT so we won't need antivrus software. I ain't bytein' -- they can byte me.
A barebones program... I didn't like the interface in the first place. Looks like they are busy tailoring many pieces under the same cover... I would prefer Norton any time.
Is someone paying for this? My beta is not costing me anything to test it. Who is kidding who? I have been beta testing this for a month and have had no problems at all. I think they got this one right.
norton is a virus in itself, AVG FREE for me,
Just by an Apple and you wouldn't need this stuff. It just works....
After looking at Microsoft's beta, it is clear that, once again, they have opted to ignore customers who want or need reliability & control of their firewall, scans, back-ups, & defrags, etc. Having everything take place "in the background" would be a fine philosophy, if it worked; Microsoft has yet to create a smooth and reliable process for downloading and updating any of their products. I am certainly not going to switch to a security program that should be updating on a daily or weekly basis when those updates will either, if past experience is any guide, (A) fail to install properly and create problems from the very beginning, and/or (B) takeover and crash computers when the program decides it needs to run and install subsequent "updates" at a time of it's own choosing. No one I know is going to switch to Microsoft, and neither will I.
I've installed and run the programme twice in two days. Installation was simple...found a virus [three files infected] that Norton Anti-virus missed.
However, I will not pay for the final product. I've already paid too much for MS products since Windows 3.0 and every iteration since 3.0.
Right,
we can all buy apple so the security flaws are found in it just like microsoft had done to it. have fun learning new stuff linux fans, im stickin with microsoft.
as for onecare, i installed and seems to work very good.
I love it how everyone has to stick up for Microsoft, I wonder how much everyone who is pro-microsoft gets paid for they're post. Propaganda is such a wonderfull thing, people can write about the stats they saw in a pipe dream and call it fact, just cause they're getting paid or have a Bias.
Why do you think Windows suffers from so many problems? Probably because most hackers are constantly searching for security holes and vulnerabilities in the most popular platform. I am interested to see how well Linux or Mac platforms would stand up to the same level of scrutiny; they would probably find just as many flaws. How many stupid people use Linux? Not many. People who already know what they are doing use Linux and understand healthy computing. People who don't know what they are doing use Mac because it is harder to shoot yourself in the foot via configuration mishaps. People who don't know what they are doing also use Windows and end up installing some retarted mouse cursor theme or some desktop toy that, in the background, installs malware which in turn causes their system to go down in flames; "It is obviously MS's fault for my ignorance and stupidity" I submit no, if your system gets hosed it is probably because you screwed it up and you can do the same thing in Linux. (only it's easier) As for the OneCare, why not charge, you never payed for lifetime technical support; Linux developers rely on support of their systems for income...why didn't they make their system more stable or easier to use? This point is moot.
The truth of the matter is that you're going to find and use whatever works for you. If you are pro M$ good for you.... I hope you have a deep wallet and lots of patience. In part, the reason Linux hasn't taken over the world the way many of it's enthusiasts have wanted is because the developers haven't yet figured out that most average users arent saavy enough to compile their own binaries and device drivers or reconfigure a kernel. Once they do realise that though, the world of computing and open source will be very interesting. Just the same, The linuxers keep M$ honest. M$ doesn't have the luxury of releasing crap and charging top dollar anymore. Which means finally we see some good stuff out of Redmond(hint XP- It's about time!!!!) Just find a good antivirus program with a real time scanning engine, that monitors email, and use the standard windows firewall, and one or two good spyware programs and forget about it. Unless you visit Porn sites 24x7 you probably aren't going to run into proactive viruses that look for you. Don't open up email from strangers and you shouldn't need to fork over ridiculous subscription fee money. The most valuable thing M$ does is release its security patches. I wish they would come down a little on price for a good XPpro license but finally They are starting to get it right.
why is it that we should pay 150 for microsoft windows, full of bugs and security holes, and then microsoft desides to make us pay for the things they should have inclued in the first place? what is their point? only to empty your pocket into theirs
Why can't Microsoft design a 'flawless (Windows) Operating system" instead of releasing patch after patch after patch. If Windows can't be flawless, at least it can be like the MAC OS. It's not perfect, but works very well, with no virus nightmares, no spyware worries, no 'software has performed illegal' operations' and a host of countless annoyances.
Is the 'OneCare' tool going to have a service pack? and several security updates? and slow the down PC? and require activation each time you install on the same PC? and perform illegal operations....
If it's going to do all of the above, we don't need it.
Antivirus? Windows is a virus! Does it uninstall itself?
I just downloaded and put it on this pm. I am aggravated already. You HAVE to run the tuneup at night, cause you are not gonna do anything while it is busy.
It has locked up explorer repeatedly, and the pages are just crawling, like my dsl is bad. NOT.
The lumped Virus, backup, defrag, and something else all together, and you cannot turn off one or any. You have to wait and the virus is interminably slow.... defrag isn't too hot either, and there is almost no information available. Digg is down, so I can't even see what is going on...
I'm glad I didn't unload my avg and Microsoft anti spyware, altho I may have to to get this to work. They really need to break that stuff out.
Call me bummed again... They do it every time, I try to adopt early. I'm AM just a beta tester. hehehehehehe
I haven't used this as of yet.. I don't trust beta software, generally. But as a PC professional, I challenge any software company to come up with an OS that has literally thousands of companies designing software and hardware for it, and to attempt to run ALL of them with some moderate level of success. If it could be done by someone else - it would have been done by now.
Linux is getting better - I use it and M$ at home - but it doesn't support or do everything that I want to do or that I need to do. Same with a MAC - great machine, GREAT-looking, functional OS. Very, very user-friendly, very stable. But stability must be pretty easy when you have complete control over all hardware and drivers created for your machine. Keep that in mind before you bash M$.
Their stuff works - it's people that scan for vulnerabilites and then write malicious code to exploit those vulnerabilities that are causing the majority of problems that Windows users have faced for years.. the rest of the problems can almost always be traced back to something bone-headed that a user did - opening email from strangers, opening attachments, clicking ok on porn websites that want to install something, not installing updates and running good, CURRENT antivirus software. Those are the root of the problems... Not M$ or their flagship product.
Is it a prereq for PCW readers to make severe spelling errors or are those added later by the moderator?
OneCare is "one-stop shopping for people who don't want to manage their own security". Those of us who don't need our hands held will continue Norton, AVG, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm and so on. It's intended for a certain demographic.
I had problems with locking up as well. It didn't prompt me to uninstall NIS. The notifications are cleaner, but that is the only feature that I can see that is nicer or better than Norton.
I think this only Microsoft's opening move in what will become a full-fledged transition to an eventual subscription model for the OS.
it's seems to work, let's give it a try and comment later....
Should be free, at least the anti-mal-ware component. That said, I am extremely please that MS is wading into this market.
I have been fighint with McAfee's program and company for several days now. Program stopped working inexplicably. I could find no explanation on their confusing web site. Couldn't find a correct phone # to call. No phone numbers were available after hours. And an email I sent two days ago still hasn't been reponded to. Bottom line: MCAFEE'S SERVICE STINKS!
I've been using MS's anti-spam software for months, and it is virtually flawless, so I have high hopes for this new MS product.
If MS can match the quality of their products with quality service, this will be a homerun.
what microsoft did impacted society and made it whatever it is - but now's time for changin'. Anyway, I give respect to them. (frankly, I don't think windows can transform into a stable system - even in future - after years of upgrading and hole-shutting).
Installed it yesterday and then uninstalled it today. Program kept freezing up and other programs hen it was running.
someone here is telling us that because of advanced users don't have their computers on windows-platform (a popular platform indeed) - and that if any Linux/UNIX platform could be as popular as MS windows - then hackers would seek out the holes even there. Man, you miss the point: if you have any Linux/UNIX platfirm - you can fix it with lot's of different ways - while MS windows offers to send and admistratinve message to MS corp. no matter how tiny the problem is you have no other way but to switch off automatic error reporting OFF!
At last after owning and using every windows and recieving no help and asked to pay for ME help on a oem loaded computer this may mean some changes
all windows is delivered with many flaws i would guess i spent many hours days and weeks reloading re booting and crying i have never seen such troublesome products delivered new full of faults and a disclaimer. Then told how wealthy these people are from overpriced poor peformers. Things might be improving.
A positive note about CareOne!
I downloaded Norton on a subscription renewal this past summer. I then started having trouble with my Dell, Norton's downloaded program locked up my PC continusouly, finally I uninstalled Norton. I then went to Microsoft's firewall, and the free EZ Antivirus protection offered by Microsoft.
Guess what! No more computer problems!
I have been waiting for Microsoft to come up with a system like CareOne, now that I have installed CareOne, I really like it!
I'll purchase CareOne when the free beta expires!

amazes me why no one on here uses nod32...has to be the best anti-virus i have ever seen.. simple..seamless,and you never know its on your system..and it is highly recommenced by leo laporte..try it .. you won^t be disappointed
Depending on the price I would purchace CareOne,beta works great
It would be nice if they bundle Co with Microsft Plus package
I used MS Antispyware from its inception. I got rid of it because I created a local system webpage that was nothing but generic (no script whatsoever) that simply displayed text and I made it my default IE webpage (for no delay if no internet connection existed). That webpage was always detected as malware by MS Antispyware for one reason only - not its content, but just its filename! NO other security utility other than it ever reported that webpage as malware. I reported the problem but MS never fixed it. I have no intention of paying for that or similar false positives with malware detection nor for lack of a problem being addressed, so I will NOT be installing OneCare onto systems. I will NOT recommend it and it WILL be removed (along with Norton/McAfee/Symantec) or the customer systems I clean will not be warranted to remain clean during my normal 90-days service warranty period. I predict that OneCare will be a defective excuse to not produce a properly secure Windows product.
I had signed up for the Onecare beta program. I installed it, restarted my computer and since it was slow, proceeded to restart it again. Finally, I got tired of the terrible performance and uninstalled it.
It will be helpful to people who are not very familiar with computers aka people who don't read PC World.
Pretty nice stuff, but I'm not a lonely, disgusting, overweight linux nerd so what do I know :)
Norton makes more money selling anti-virus software at $40 EACH YEAR than Microsoft selling operating systems. Norton's Internet Security suite is the worst software I have ever seen.
So far it is working very well. The interface is easy on the eyes and a pleasure to work with.
No problems so far. As a side note, I agree with the other "poster" above, Norton is horrible to work with and a poor integrator that just slows a system down and the "uninstalls" are never easy. The best antivirus so far for the buck (0$) is AVG and AVAST. Hopefully "1 care" will remain free or at least cheap enough for us to afford. Another nice touch would be the ability to back-up on a 2nd internal hard drive.Nice job.
Big deal !!! Just another mediocre MS product that they are trying to push in your face and empty your wallets with. I don't see any thing innovative. In fact, the only time MS innovates is when they buy a company that already has a product that is unique or innovative or they copy what somebody else has already been doing. Save your money and take a look at some good, free and open-source tools.
i was testing this from the beginning... one day, i actually had to backup about 5 DVD's worth of data, so i said "let's try the OneCare backup"... man, that was the longest 4 hours of my life... that's how long it took to backup 5 dvd's... when it was done, i realized i had another disc to do. screw this, used nero and it took 15 minutes. so 15 x 5 =75 minutes as opposed to the 4 hours it took for OneCare to do it...
But the dinasours... we can't do without them... ohh yeah.. MS sucks. i know. i worked for them for 3 years. Now I write systems for Linux. Microsoft is going to rot in the grave some day
I took the bait and downloaded it yesterday - 4 hours of dial-up time and then, after completing the install, Internet Explorer wouldn't work. Firefox still worked fine - go figure. After several attempts to work the problem out, I uninstalled OneCare and everything was back to normal. No more OneCare beta for me!
Groovy - love the beta versions. Do you think I should install this on my Dos 5.0 machine?
I love reading this stuff! I just tells me that more than half the world hates Microsoft! Yet! We still buy it! One more thing...if Apple had made the right decisions to actually become a "Microsoft" - they would be just as bad. S. Jobs is a meglomaniac! But he has good taste!
MS sux's linux rules YAAAAAAA = kirby
Quote - Just by an Apple and you wouldn't need this stuff. It just works....
Spoken like a true rotten Apple user. I think if most Apple users would actually wear shoes and make it to school they would know how to spell.
This Microsoft company is really great. I think their CTO needs a raise for such great ideas. He is handsome also.
Installed easily. Antivirus was thorough but a bit slow. Tune Up was lovely. OneCare caused many web pages to load slowly even with IE.
Thankfully I was able to uninstall OneCare and go back to the latest version of Zone Alarm
Internet Security. I probably would not pay for
OneCare unless and until most of the bugs were worked out and speed improves.
"Mac platforms would stand up to the same level of scrutiny; they would probably find just as many flaws."
Hackers are people who wanted to be well known. Quote one "I wanted to show the world my skills" if this is the case then why are their still 0 viruses for Mac OSX? Wouldn't a hacker that would like to be well known create the first virus for Mac OSX?
The answer is Yes they would! Nothing is better than to be the first ever in anything. So why does Mac OSX have 0 viruses because the operating is more secure.
Good Luck with this lame .mac rip-off that Microsoft has brought out. I've left that plantation years ago.
Hi,
Anybody tried just disabling AV (eTrust, Norton, etc.) vs. uninstalling?
It is a shame we have to uninstall good software to test a beta software! My current security suite is working well - I hate to uninstall just to test!
Hi,

Coming soon - Microsoft Linux
How do I disable Windows please?
Virus protection - uninstall Windows (yes/no)?
Just get a Mac. :-)
OneCare is microsofts way of saying that Windows has holes in it and that they are going to charge you to fix them.
Um, linux vs windows and ad-hominem attacks aside, has anyone considered whether this is good for the consumer? I mean, they've set up a situation where you buy the OS for a flat fee (or get it OEM gratis), but you buy a subscription for virus-free, bug-free operation? Uh, I see a conflict of interest here. It is now TO THEIR ADVANTAGE to produce a problematic, insecure OS, because it means more subscriptions. Sure, we have options for now, but for how long? Remember when other companies published office suites? Or IDE suites? Yeah, it's been a while... How long before MS runs the anti-virus/anti-malware coms out of business?
As for the MS-supporters, I can understand you getting irritated with the constant "MS SUX" chanting from the linux/OSX crowd, but seriously: Do you WANT a world where only one company makes everything? Is this EVER good for the consumer?
you should have to take a test and be issued a license to use a computer.
I downloaded the OneCare application and it installed without any untoward activity. My Norton 05 application was also unistalled during the process (OneCare enables a firewall during this process to protect PC). I used the OC application for several days... also found no untoward activity.
Results: Scans are slower than that of Norton... took 1.25 hours to scan about 40GB of data files.
Action: I unistalled OneCare and reinstalled Norton IS 05... decided that I'd rather have another vendor defending my PC, for purposes of accountability. MSFT doesn't have the greatest reputation for bug-free applications or timely remedies. Norton makes their living at protecting PCs.
I also use "CCleaner", free from ccleaner.com to keep applications and the registry tidy, as well as Adaware to clean up such infections. These three applications combined with normal defragging keep the system running fine.
jz
I agree with what some of you said about ?no fee? for One Care. I feel Windows XP and my enjoyment using it should not be spoiled by buying and installing countless bits of software trying to protect XP?s shortcomings in security which will always be ongoing. As a PC user of 15 yrs, my PC time is increasingly spent keeping the OS stable, clean and running and it should not be that way. Sure many of these clean up, protection wares run on a schedule but I don?t leave my PC on 24x7 anymore. I use Counter Spy and Norton currently but always looking for options.
XP by default should do what these 3rd party programs offer. Why doesn?t IE delete cookies upon exit? come on? I need a 3rd party program to do this? Here?s a simple spam rule OE should do. Move all email to a SPAM folder unless it?s from ppl on this list. Spam problem solved, spread of virus minimized. Too bad for ppl who have no clue, oh, my computer is broke. What?s a patch? Do I need this SPAM?
I tried that beta prior to getting my clients to use it. I have them on Anti-Spyware beta which is a pretty good freeware option for now.
I personally am a huge fan of AVG from Grisoft.
Ok, with One Care Major issue. I installed and 3 times in one hour had a bsod with the same orror. Never had it before. Uninstalled and 24 hours later its not occurred again.
I accepts its a beta and reported it faithfully. Will wait for release and try again. Nothing against Microsoft here justa fair review I hope.
Its bloody aweful.
1. It corrupted system Restore which I only found by chance.
2. Corrupted itsself so it could not be unistalled!
3. AND it used 30% of system resources> Significant slowdown.
4. Ive gone back to using Zonealarm PRO and Norton AV 2006 which work flawlessly. ANd learnt the lesson of playing with BETA products the hard way.
Oh and never rely on System restore!
I installed it yesterday on a Dell laptop (1 GB of RAM). OneCare uses about 50 MB of RAM for the various applications in memory so it could be a bigger hit on low RAM machines. But I frequently multitask with 5 or 6 Internet Explorers running at about 25 MB of RAM each so a bit more doesn't seem too bad to me.
Internet Explorer does seem a tad slower, but it could be just my paranoia after reading some of the comments above. *;-)
Comments: Didn't detect AVG free (I decided to see if it would identify it and ask to uninstall as it advertised it would do (it didn't). Ran a scan...over 1 hour for about 50 GB of data which is about par with a full system scan for many competitors.
I like the right button scan function in Windows Explorer and the outbound firewall (missing from SP2 which was a big omission by MS).
I like the Outlook scanning very much, but wish I could decipher the attachments numbers cited in a scan (it said I had MyDoom and Swen saved as a attachment, but didn't tell me how to find them other than an attachment number). I have a huge Outlook.PST file with over 1500 attachments archived. Probably do have a baddie stored away in there somewhere.
All in all I am pleased with the beta so far, but wish it was available as a download file and also could be used on at least W2K. As a web install it won't be much good at cleaning up a virus-infected machine, but there are other tools for that. At least it doesn't load as many services as Norton. *;-)
I agree with bill hates on the first post "microsoft is teh suck."
teh suck
What a shame...so much useless blather...and very little helpful experience with this Beta. If you can't be useful, just stay off the line, eh?
For me....my web browsing became very slow, especially with web pages containing lots of background colors and graphics.
After a couple of days I re-loaded my pre-OneCare image and abandoned the program.
My experience is: some MS programs are pretty good...and some are just awful. This beta is not ready for prime time.
to the peeps talking about how slow one care is so they put nortons back on thier PC is a joke right? concidering nortons is the biggest resource hogs out there not to mention one of the slower AV apps too
but as for me using a MS AV FW or even thier joke of a anti-spyware app not bloody likly.
what I mean by that is if thier own security experts can't keep their own PC's safe why the hell would I trust them to keep mine safe.
those of you who don't know what I mean by this do a news search for about a month and a half ago involving MS head of security
I can't comment on how OneCare works, because i wasn't able to install it. I keep on getting Error 1277. Their tech sent me a uninstall file to clean out previous installation and reinstall, but still won't work. Ever since I try installing OneCare, my Firefox won't start. Once OneCare was uninstalled, firefox starting working fine.
Tried out OneCare. Got the blue screen of death so I uninstalled. Everything is fine now.
Obviously I wouldn't recommend it.
After I downloaded OneCare, my PC went haywire. I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows. I won't touch it again.
Hey, plz help me. I am not able ti install OneCare, System Check is not installing. I have checked every setting but it diplays the cross on the upper left corner. PLZ Help
OneCare sounded too good to be true and it was! Besides making the comp slower due to its realtime checks it took ahell of a lot of RAM ro render the comp unusable for any other task. And, I am operating on a fairly recent machine with 512 MB RAM and an AMD 64 bit Athlon processor. Had to unistall it finally after suffering for almost a week. Shall not rely on Microsoft for patching its own errors in the future: they just might be too close to them to see them as such!
Sorry microsoft.
NOD32 for antivirus+Microsoft Antispyware+SpywareBlaster+AdAwareProfessional shall do for me!

ONE THING THAT PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS TOPIC, IF U R LINUX USER U SHOULD READ THIS COMENT BEFORE SAYING A WORD. OTHERWISE STAY QUIET.
I'm usin One Care live an no problems w/ it. I am still using the msn version of mcafee just in case and I still use zone alarm firewall because I dont trust treir firewall. Everything else in one care is fine. BTW The msn mcafee ver. and zonealarm are not inteferring with one care. My system is not slowing down, I always use programs that take allot of ram up so I cant tell the difference. HERES SOME INFO FOR MICROSOFT HATERS.
-THERE ARE MANY BUGS IN WINDOWS BECAUSE IT IS THE WORLDS BEST SELLING OS AND HACKERS GOT TO GO AFTER THE BEST.!!!!!!!!!!!
- iF MAC WAS AS GOOD SELLING AS WINDOWS AND MANY PEOPLE USE MAC THAN ANY OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM MAC WOULD BE NO BETTER THAN WIN.
-90% OF ALL COMPUTER USERS IN THE WORLD(OR IS IT THE US) USE SOME FORM OF THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM. tHE OTHER 10% IS OTHERS SYSTEMS. bECAUSE OF THIS THAT IS WHY PEOPLE TRY TO HACK WINDOWS PC'S!!!
Got That Mac Lovers
I get so tired of the Windows bashers. I have been working with computers since the end of the 1960s, worked with a lot of operating systems, and speak from experience when I say that ALL operating systems have their problems and the more an operating system is used, the more the problems will show. I well remember doing development work for the supposedly "uncrashable" Mac and managing to hang it 2 or 3 times a day. Since it was "uncrashable", it had no "off" switch (you used the keyboard to shut it down) so, when it crashed, you had to unplug the idiot machine, then plug it back in to reboot. My son, who had to use a Mac for graphics work, encountered similar problems. I also worked with a couple of UNIX systems that we crashed regularly. I expect if either Mac or LINUX had as many users as Windows, everyone would be bashing them instead. Until you have written a complete OS or system as complex as Windows, I suggest you back way off - you have no real basis to make the judgement call. Aside from that, serious computer users choose the OS most suited to the work they are doing. Sometimes that is Windows, sometimes that is a Mac OS, sometime LINUX. If you don't really need Windows for any reason and you hate Windows that much, don't use it. But stop bashing it.
Oh yes, I do agree that Win95 and Win98 did tend to be a bit flaky at times, but I used Win2000 a few years back doing serious development work and it never crashed; I am now using WinXP Pro and it has only crashed once (hardware problem, not software) so if you are having problems, maybe you should look close at your hardware or the software you have installed (since I know poorly written software can cause problems) or the third party drivers, but don't always blame the OS.

ms evergreen os, it will goonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn===============================
My computer has regular updates, Norton Antivirus, Ad aware, Spybot, Windows XP Home SP2, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and it STILL has viruses. And i run all this so called 'anti-WHATEVER' software every day. I dont even uses email and microsoft still crashes.
Microsoft, make an OS that works!
onecare from windows is a great concept I've used it and it works great, I have no idea where these norton's viruses are located far as I can see there is none. I also don't understand why so many cut down the software? To my understanding those who don't see the "good" into onecare must be those who feel everything should be given to them, well sorry to say but you don't get something for nothing. You want perfection you are gonna have to pay the price for it. Like it or not. That's life grow up and deal with it. By the way Norton's I.S. I've been using for many years and not once have I had any troubles, mostly cause it does run through your security settings of your interent explorer, which in general most people feel they are safe at the lowest setting possible I don't know personally I really don't care. It's your money do what you want with it, all I'm saying here is that you want the best then buy it, because it isn't free.
I installed this beta last week - went well, but. The OneCare backup put a 12gb file on my external hard drive that can not be deleted, which I would like to do - any ideas how to get this file off my external?

The above argument has one big flaw in it. There are no viruses for
Mac OSX because it's market share is still too low. For a virus to
be successful it really needs one thing: to spread. This means it
needs a large enough population as a target. Mac OSX doesn't yet
meet this requirement. It will probably will since Apple has now
moved towards Intel platforms and hope their market share will
improve dramatically. I guess if that happens we will find quite
soon a virus for Mac OSX in the wild. It's hard to make a successful
virus that will only work on less that 10% of the computers in the
world. Such a virus is doomed from the start.
Remember Apple 1,2,3. They are the first documented viruses. And yes
they targeted Apple because back then it was the OS with the largest
market share.
Viruses have as their main target the home users. There are some
worms that actually targeted servers (mainly Windows) but their time
is now long gone. But there are a lot of tools to crack Linux servers
as well because now they have quite an important share on the server
market. Just
Don't get me wrong. I'm not a M$ fan. One Care is pretty good but I
expected better performance from it. There are other AV's out there
that are better and that's not good for M$ and that quite strange.
An AV is tightly linked with the OS and since at M$ they have all
the insides they need which is a BIG competitive advantage over all
other AV companies. This makes it even harder for me to understand
why their AV is so slow.
Installed it and after a few minutes my proc. was pegged @100%. It wasn't even doing anything. I have an AMD 2400+ and a gig of ram. I guess it's not enough for this blotted software.
I'm loving Windows OneCare. Having one button to click to defrag, scan for viruses, and backup to my external HD is great. I was also apprehensive about uninstalling Norton, but I don't regret it now. Word to a previous user, if you're not using IE, you can't open the link. I was using firefox at first and couldn't use the button...swapped over to IE and it worked fine. It's all good.
Gee, that's all great! I can not get the damn prgram to install. The third try was not the charm.
The support for One Care is terrific! I installed it in an attempt to clean my computer of several worms & trojans that got in while using pc-cillin. I couldn't use the search assistant, or open task manager, etc. After a couple of email responses & suggestions, a phone time was set. The rep called & spent over 4 HOURS loking over my computer, cleaning the registry, running scans, and so on, to correct the problems. It did fix most of them, & then she got me free help with some XP problems that had developed ( I needed to reinstall some files, but didn't have disks). Usually they charge, because XP was installed by my computer manufacturer, but I got free service. All replies were very prompt, helpful, feedback was good, & everybody spoke American English! I'm very happy, even tho yes, it does slow down your system-but so did my Norton!
HO GOD,
How can there be so many people in the USA that do not understand Security.
M$ did could lock down all of their programs if they wanted to. The problem is if they did they would not be able to collect all the INFO that they do.
If anyone believes that M$ makes money from sales of software, you have an other guess coming.
It seems that most of the people that Love M$ also have do idea what security means and like the post from dmhslib are clueless about what certain types of programs Can do or Should do. PCcillin Is Virus ware. They will tell you if a worm or Trogan is on your computer, but cannot do much. PCcillin does though, Tell you What programs to get to get rid of Spyware.
I wonder how many people in the USA know that Viruses are 1% of ALL security problems.
So you all have fun, Pay M$ to SPY on You , get AOL Too, they do a Great job, Oh dont forget to sign up for a G-Mail account and d/l all of Googles FREE SPYWARE TOO!
If anyone is interested in a Secure win OS Rip all of M$`s Spyware Out. IE, Outlook, WMP, Notepad etc. Any program that Is part of the Shell needs to come out. Give litepc dot com a look.
The Top Security CO's in the world Give away programs to Keep PC's Clean.
M$ hit on the problem most people have. The More It Costs That More its Worth.

worst crap u can ever see!
-the slowest virus checker
-defragment is okay but not googd enough
-GUI is crap (hardly any options available, even for those who only know how to turn a pc on and off)
-no explanations or whatever on any detected threats...
-takes more system memory than most of the other antivirus and antispyware combined.
SOLUTION:
-turn automatic updates on
-get tuneup utilities 2006 + registry fix
-get zone alarm firewall or keep the default windows firewall as it is
-get NOD32/panda/avast/AVG
-get spybot + ad aware/spyware doctor
and save ur time and arse
-get this if u thought internet security is something like u waiting near a traffic light and ur safe when the green light is on and u better watch ur arse when the red light is on...(MS gives this impression with one care but it's never like that and it will never be like that)
I just started using their beta and it's great so far, no issues. someone here wrote that their web experience has decreased, that it appears to run slower, I too use firefox and see no issue. Yes MSFT will charge for this, so what? It's a biz. You don't want viruses, quit going to porn sites and don't get on the net period. Use hotmail, yahoo or gmail to avoid email viruses. Which is how most viruses enter a pc. Get over it.
For those who find that OneCare slows down there computer...I had the same problem at first. The solution is simple: uninstall OneCare, delete any other antivirus and/or firewall on your system, and run a registry cleaner to remove all traces of the programs. Re-install OneCare. Works like a charm after that!
downloaded both ie7 and one care, had some freezing and they did slow down my computer. after a couple of days the freezing has stopped and the speed has picked up, but still a little slow. like the way it works. i am not to impressed with ie7.
Max: It could be IE7, and I suggest holding off on IE7 to it is finished. This is more than likely the problem.
Everyone: Only one Anti-virus app should be on a computer. Pick one and stick with it. The common slow-downs with WOC is other AV/Firewall products installed. I have seen people post they see an increase in speed over Norton, even a friend does! If you ever need support there is free e-mail support throughout the beta. You can get support in the forum at http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsonecare If you use the purchase now botton between April & 31, you get the first year for $20. Else it is ~$50. Since a CD will be sold in stores there could be promo's. Please also note this product is ment for people who do not want to deal with security. Not that advanced user that wants to configure everything. I do, but I gave it up because I like the hands off approach.
i decided to give one care a try,had to uninstall avg,but not avast! miss my avg, together with avast they = free, microsoft wants to charge 20.00, just til the end of april then it's 50.00, seems like a no brainer to me! of course i'm new to this computing stuff and i got a virus with already installed norton, so to me 2 free's vs 50.00 = duh, do the math!!
I installed one care easily, except Update freezes up at Service Pack 3 for office XP. It won't run since I can't insert MSWord 2002 disc as was factory installed when I bought computer from Dell
I've been using onecare for a good few months now. I think that MS has hit the nail on the head to an extent. The integration of many tools into one is a great idea and for my every day needs, works fine. Here's the biggest dilema i've had with onecare. The subscription costs. I've already sent a formal letter (at the cost of $3 for the stamp) so that i know that my letter is actually read by a person not a microsoft computer. Onecare should not cost the consumer anything to use. Microsoft finally solves there problems but find it neccisary to charge the comsumer. My example i use is if ford had a defective part in there cars that would ignite the car then ford would replace the part with a fixed part. MS have a defective part in there OS yet they charge you for there mistake. (I've worked with macs, there OS is pretty much a virus, mind the constant freezing)
i do thank windows xp has hit a gold mine, Best of all if you are not sure about the antivirus, you can run ( nod 32) with it, works find running in the background
So After reading a bit of the results of OneCare Live, I m already dislike the program, 2 only US citizens yakpuke shame 4 Micro$uck I was HUGHE fan of rav (DIDNT UPGRADE THE DEF FILES SINCE 1st July 05 and M$ buyed up he )from Romania but they ****ed real over then the M$s
Norton used 4 1 month 6yrs ago results virusses thankyou and when unstall this 1, had to reinstall M$ wins I had 3 oss on 1 disk, the only program I use is ghost 8 magnificent prog and 9 once used had need the backup 2 weeks didnt want to install the image image RIP Was getting NUTS Image was clean install from everything had 2 redo the ****ing job pFFFFFFF
normaly 2 a 3 hrs with format c: and ghost opmost 45mins
bitdefender was alright but came up very bad from my test had viruswarning but didnt remove the ****er :-(( zuchhhht ow sssighhhtt, a dutch friend gave me nice dvd xppowerdisk only dutch I like more the US but has a PrEttY Neath fix for NOPD32 gives me trialversion for 16million days and works GEIL mns horny adaware the fullbucket of sweepers guards etc and STILL we get the SHIT inside Linux Knopppix Live and Auditor are my favos the hplincrap was working 3xs and suse 6 byed original wasnt compatibel
hassl to install
and I say Amiga forever no fooling arounds with TEMP or virtualfiles swapped over the edge files none of that crappy
I installed Windows Live one care last week and have 13 errors because of .net framework v2.0 which is required. Sure they want you to uninstall Norton System Works V 2006 because then you cant see all of the errors. This program is not ready for release yet.
i uninstalled that shit, and now my internet wont work, and my windows firewall service no longer works.
fantastic crap huh?
I Installed OC a month or so ago, after having nothing but constant trouble with various versions of Norton AV and Norton IS for years, very poor performing bloatware. I tried AVG free, was very good, but not a complete solution. Spybot and AddAware are a pain in butt to use. OC is a one stop solution. Cant wait for it to come full on line so I can buy.
BTW I am in Australia (you know, down near the bottom of the world) and apart from the fact that I'm disapointed that I can't purchase it on line because I am not in the US, it loads and runs fine. Mr Vogel, you should pass this on so we might have the opportunity to purchase it early... Thanks M$ for a fine product.
Ms Sucks, bu so do Linux? 80% of standard software in the market are designed from MS. WTF, who wants to use Linux?
What a boondoggle!
Monopolistic, anti-competetive issues aside (you have to have IE6 installed), Microsoft spends years creating a twisted, buggy, security-risk laden, non-user-friendly, crash prone operating system and now they want the consumer to fund fixing it!
I'll continue to use AVG, Zone Alarm, SpybotS&D, etc.. (still currently free versions that work well).
How do YOU spell "arrogance"?
Many hate Microsoft for their new upcoming products and yet they keep using Microsoft's products. If you don't like it don't use it. The ones who use it, they should tell the flaws in the current available version so those can eb corrected. End of Story.
I installed One Care when it first came out in Beta form. I am on my second uninstall and reinstall due to external back up issues. I wrote MS about the issues and they sent a set of directions that were beyond my capabilities of follwing without mucking something up, so uninstall etc.
NEW OS : DON'TCARE
PRICE : $999000 ( VERY CHEAP)
(THIS OS DON'T CARE ANY VIRUS, SPYWARE, ADWARE AND HACKERS.BUY NOW AND YOUR WILL GET FREE VIRUS)
WHOEVER SAID THAT EBAY RUNS ON LINUX, YOUR WRONG. EBAY RUNS ON IIS 6.0, which runs on Windows. Now. Whoever said to buy and Apple is gay. Because Apple software is shit.and is a closed Operating system. that why most software is not written for mac. Tough luck with your mac. Now, Microsoft made windows onecare to protect people..and i say it does. people hate microsoft for viruses. do microsoft makes these viruses?? the answer is NO!. you go to a spyware site that's your fault not Microsoft. so stop blaming Microsoft or your OEM manufacturer that you have a virus. NO OS is full proof of viruses.
I cannot connect to my Windows Live Beta Account. I keep getting a blank page. GRRRRR!
This is VERY annoying. I send Microsoft many messages but it does not make an iota of difference.
Posted in England at 17:37 hours British Summer Time on Tuesday 13th June 2006
If you have a Hotmail account DO NOT be persuaded by Microsoft to convert to Windows Live Beta. There are too many bugs in the new system and you will not be able to read your messages.
I am SO CROSS that they persuaded me to change. ARRRGH!
I will buy MS products. They intregrate well with OS and other MS products
If anyone is considering using live one care Please be retired an have allot of time on your hands because you will be spending the time on hold and speaking to Microsoft advisors trying to get your computers printer and everything running after this system manages to mess up your systems.
Over the last month I have spent over 15 hours on hold with support and right now one care update is telling me I am not online even though I am all over the internet.
It has Been a NIGHTMARE since installing live one care. one computer is totally down and now my laptop is not working after a update from the live one over the weekend.
WARNING WARNING do not install until this product is better.
does anyone have an active link to the one care beta download, or exe u can send????? I cant find it anymore.
I bought windows live one care a week ago and im already having problems updating antivirus it wont do it by itself and it wont even work doing it manual. One care realy sucks and just killls your time.....Dont buy it
I've been using OC for over a month on two of my notebooks - XP Pro and XP Home, both w/IE6.
Simple download and install; excellent GUI; automatically performs a suite of tasks that were previously run independently. I would like to see a registry cleaner added to the Tune-up section of this product.
I expect to see bugs in a Beta version, but have yet to find any.
Works great. I have had few issues and as for microsoft bashers it is easy for Mac to create a OS that only runs on machines that they make, and most people dont have the time to compile linux based OS. Most dont and the technical knowledge to turn on the machine so with the flaws you see at least your average grandma can figure it out....and when they break it I can charge them 50 bucks to fix it...lol

It seems to me that Microsoft is ethically bound to provide "fixes" to their products (in this case Windows) on a no-additional-charge basis, just as do auto manufacturers. The virus vulnerability of Windows is a flaw that should have been remedied years ago, possibly with an entirely new engine underneath. It needn't have (and shouldn't have) occurred. Microsoft should now take responsibility by doing whatever they possibly can, after the fact, at no additional cost, to remedy the situation. Not so for various add-on products, but SO for "fixes" or remedies to flaws in their existing product(s). This is a business ethics issue. Will Microsoft respond in an ethical manner? I hope so.
I bought Windows Live One Care and it killed my computer. I'm up to $250 in repair damages and I'm not done yet. I might as well buy a new computer. Thanks Bill Gates!
