Firefox 1.5 Coming on Nov. 29

Give or take a few days, according to the Mozilla folks who were just here. If you can't wait until then, release candidate 3 is out today. I don't see a download link for it just yet on www.getfirefox.com, but if you've got RC2 installed you can click Help -> Check for Updates and install it, or wait for the pop-up.

That automatic updating is probably the most significant change in the new version. There are also new accessibility options, and you can clear all your private data - cache, history, passwords, etc. - with one option under Tools.

But really, you probably won't notice that many differences between 1.0 and 1.5. Most of the changes are back-end, to make it faster and render better, Mozilla says. Version 2, due out in mid-2006 will have more user-interface type changes, they say.

We'll have a story in our January issue that looks at the new Firefox, IE, and Opera versions.

Here's a little bonus: one of the guys from Mozilla had what he said was a Google SMS extension that let you select some text, then click a little phone icon in the upper-right and send that text as an SMS message to somebody's phone. Sounds like it might not be out just yet, but it looked like a fun browser gadget, so keep an eye out for it.

Edit (thanks specialk):

The Firefox extension is called "Google Send To Phone."

It can be downloaded here: http://toolbar.google.com/firefox/extensions/

Well... if you read the title of the article, "Firefox 1.5 coming Nov 29", the following sentence "Give or take a few days..." does make sense.

It doesn't make sense, since the title is not supposed to be part of the article. Also, where is "here"?

Firefox 1.5 is just setting up for 2.0, the IE killer. By the time 3.0 is out, IE will be nothing more than a painful memory. Btw, what is with Netscape? Are they going to release a browser more in line with the Mozilla/Navigator 7.x format, or are they going to continue down this unsuccessful path of dual engines in a bloated piece of spyware?

It sounds like a nice tool but any user agreement that says it can be changed at any time without notification sounds like an open invite for adware.

Portable Firefox, the version that runs from a USB thumbdrive, iPod, external hard drive, et al is following the same path and will be available right after Firefox 1.5 goes gold. RC3 was out within hours of the 1.5 RC3 release last night. Snag it here:

If the "give or take" thing doesn't make sense to you, I don't think you're qualified to be on a computer. Firefox rules. Hopefully IE will soon disappear. I'm sick of yahoo launch not supporting ff.

When will Google SMS become compatible with Firefox 1..5? (I've had the plugin for a few months... comes in handy at times... would hate to lose it.)

To Mr. Anonymous who says the first sentence makes no sense: you, sir, need to be slapped.

Internet Explorer will never disappear. Not anytime soon in the future.

Hey, what just happened? I was running 1.5RC2 and the Upgrade Now popup appeared offering an upgrade to 1.5. I upgraded, and now the About box says I'm running 1.5 -- NOT 1.5RC3?! A bug in the About box? A bug in the updater? Hijacked updating? Did this happen to anyone else?

It's like when they send out RC2.

"update For those wondering why this is called Firefox 1.5 and not Firefox 1.5 RC2, it's because this is a genuine release candidate. The build you have, if not problems are found, will be Firefox 1.5. If we called it RC2 in the actual client, it wouldn't be a real release candidate because we'd have to make changes to the name and then create new builds"

For eater,

I'm told it says 1.5 not 1.5rc3 because they are getting so close to releasing 1.5 they removed rc3 to keep from having the slightest problems for the actual release. but you are running 1.5rc3 whether it says it or not.

I can not wait for the release of Firefox 1.5! I think I may just snag 1.5rc3.

And yes, the first line makes sense.

Such passion about a free browser and whether or not the title of an article is part of the article. FF1.5 or 2.0 or 3.0 or IE7 or IE8 are not significant life events assuming one has a life.

Your right, it's not the names. Its the features. The features are what are important to people. As well as the security.

Firefox 1.5RC3 Rules. cant wait till the final release comes out. It just getting better and better with every new version.

Sidenot: I think alot of people are getting over the hill with the concept "Firefox going to kill Internet Explorer". HAHA. Get real guys. People still need to use internet for websites that Firefox cant handle. Internet explorer is still needed for Windows update, in which IE is the only Browser that can handle this. Yea, yea i know some people have the option in there comp to download and install critical updates. But what about optional updates. IE will never be gone. Impovements are coming up for IE7.

Yes Firefox is way better than IE in Speed, Saftely, etc. But IE will always be there. Firefox will get better once 3.0 comes out. And I believe IE will do the same.
