New Sober E-mail Worms Spreading Across the 'Net

Posted by Erik Larkin | Tuesday, November 15, 2005 11:31 AM PT

Both Kaspersky and F-Secure warned about three new Sober variants that are sliming their way into email boxes today - one even made it into my and a colleague's inboxes, past our mail gateway scanner. So keep that never-click-on-unknown-attachments idea extra firmly in mind today.

If you receive an attachment from a friend assume its friendly only if your expecting it. If not, email them and ask them if they sent u an unexpected attachment.

This new virus does not affect Mac users.

How come those virus/spyware writers seem to be more innovative than those in security business? The issue's always been "response" but has never been "pro-active"...

Because there is more money to be "gained" buy third party vendors allowing viruses to proliferate to enable them to continue selling licences for antivirus software to joe public than if viruses were stopped completely due to well designed operating systems that did not automatically let these unsolicited software scripts install themselves on host computers. If there were no more viruses out there just think of the billions of dollars in revenue that would be "lost" from security software vendors and consultants.

"Because there is more money to be "gained" buy third party vendors allowing viruses to proliferate..."
A sad true fact and we are at their mercy.

its all a scam , I think ..... With the writers of viruses and spam being the same people that write and sell the programs that protect us from these very same viruses...
They can't " think " ahead of them, but can almost instantly block a new appearence .... funny .. or no .. NOT funny .....

However as I said earlier, I you dont want to constantly be under the threat of viral attacks, adware and trojans get into Apple and you'll never have to buy or upgrade your antivirus subscription again. So simple for so few but still so hard for so many.......

Viruses and Malware

Its a bit cynical to expect security providors to be able to anticipate all and stop what is basically criminal behaviour, at best vandalism and timewasting nuisance, at worst malicious and criminal abuse of the open aspect of modern internet communications.

It is true a whole new generation of security employment has been created in response to the Viruses/Malware situation.

Whether you see it as a good or bad thing, you have to use protection and safeguards or be open to all the aggravation of loosing data, cleaning up the screwed up systems and sheer waste in downtime and peace of mind.

I've been involved with Computing since the mid 70's and believe as time goes by the means of finding and stopping the SH one Ts is improving.

Happy keyboard bashing
