Motorola Unveils Its BlackBerry Competitor

Posted by Grace Aquino | Tuesday, July 26, 2005 9:20 AM PT

Rumors about Motorola's super-slim, BlackBerry-esque device (which folks called the "Razrberry") have been circulating on the Web for months. Well, the rumor is now fact. Motorola officially unveiled the Moto Q handheld at its Financial Analyst Meeting last night in Chicago.

The Q does bear a striking resemblance to RIM's BlackBerry: It sports a color LCD on the top half, a backlit keyboard on the bottom half, and a one-handed navigation thumbwheel on its right side. It's no wonder it's been nicknamed the Razrberry--it looks like a cross between Motorola's svelte Razr cell phone and the popular BlackBerry.

What are the main differences between the two devices? The Q runs on Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 5 platform, and it features a brushed silver casing and an incredibly thin design, measuring a mere 0.45 inches thick, according to Motorola. With the Windows Mobile OS, the Q supports the Microsoft Exchange Server, which enables users to sync Outlook e-mail on-the-go.

The device is also compatible with other Microsoft applications such as Internet Explorer. The Q plays audio and video and features Bluetooth, a speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, and a 1.3-megapixel camera. It will be available in the first quarter of 2006, Motorola says. Price and carrier partnerships have not been announced. However, Motorola did show a few other devices at last night?s event. For details, hop to Stephen Lawson's story, "Motorola Unveils Slim Windows Smart Phone."

Yes but can it run linux?"

Are you kidding? Did you not see one the main advantages (IMO) of running this? You can sync it with your exchange server. That alone is really making me want one of these.

It's running a Microsoft OS, but the integration with other MSFT OS's is...pretty much zero. Some app-level integration with Exchange, that's it. Guess they can't spell synergy in Redmond. When they come up with a phone or a PDA that lets me run a remote desktop session on a Windows machine (perhaps with some screen zoom capability to allow for the form factor) I'll buy one. If Citrix can do that via a browser, why can't MSFT manage to do it on a phone or PDA?

Nextel is quickly becoming old technology. If its a GSM phone (likely) PoC (PTT over Cellular) may be possible.
