Sprint Announces Treo 650 Update

Sprint just sent me an e-mail announcing that PalmOne has posted an update to its (Sprint's) Treo 650 firmware. The update (Treo 650 Updater 1.08, as it's called on the PalmOne Web site) addresses several problems that have apparently plagued early adopters.

This include poor voice quality and the new file system that effectively gave the 650 (below) less storage space than its predecessor, the Treo 600, even though both have the same 32MB of memory. The update also includes previous patches to permit roaming and to provide drivers for Bluetooth car kits.

No word on whether a similar patch is forthing for other versions of the Treo, but on PalmOne's support page for the Cingular model (which I own), I'm noticing several patches, including a voicemail updater posted last week.

Sadly, the bloom appears to be off the Treo 650 rose. I'm hearing more and more complaints from colleagues and even strangers: At a concert a couple of weeks ago, while playing a game on my Treo 650 waiting for the show to start, a man came up to me and asked whether they'd fixed the bugs yet. I've had some problems--nothing that would make me return the Treo 650, but maybe I'm just not using it enough.

The update caused a drop in call volume. If you are in a loud environment, your treo 650 will now be to soft to hear the conversation. I'm sure that Sprint will remedy this soon...holding my breath!
