SanDisk's MP3 Player is Light and Friendly

Flash memory maker SanDisk is admittedly not the first name that comes to mind when I think MP3 player, but I have to admit the company's nifty little SanDisk Digital Audio Player has won me over. The super-compact, somewhat cylyndrical design is just one of the attractions here; it's also ultra-lightweight, to the point that I can carry it around in my pocket, and forget it's even there. Plus, it uses one AAA battery, a boon for someone like myself who never remembers to stick things on a charger.

B_sandisk player copy.jpg

Other nicetities include drag-and-drop file transfers within Windows Explorer; an integrated voice recorder, and FM radio. I'm finding the 1GB of space on my model is just enough to support a handful of albums and a slew of songs (the 1GB model costs $200; the 256MB version is $100, and the 512MB, $150)--plus, I don't have to worry about my music when I drop the unit on the concrete since it doesn't have a delicate hard drive in it. I wish there were more playback features, but overall, I've found this model's portability to be satisfying enough to overshadow its lapses.

Interestingly, SanDisk is not the only memory maker getting into the MP3 player game. LexarMedia is also offering its own line of flash-based MP3 players. I'll let you know how those look when I see them.
Comments

I got the 512 meg version and agree with Melissa: very useful, speedy, and actually sounds better than I would have expected.

The downsides:

1. Navigation is difficult because of the joystick and the arcane UI.

2. The mic/level settings for voice recording result in very quiet recordings -- you'll have to crank your volume all the way up to hear what you recorded.

I bought a 1G for my wife and loved it so much I got a 1G one for me. Joystick took some getting use to but once I figured it out, I have no problem now. Even listen to it through my car stereo. If we can use it (57 & 58 years old) anyone would like it. Great product.

any more comments the mic/recording would be most appreciated. I am looking for something that can serve as an mp3 player and a voice recorder. I attend several large functions a year and wonder if the sandisk will do the job. Or if anyone knows of another mp3 flash with voice recording that is better - I'm all ears.
thanks

I purchased the Sandisk 512mb. Overall I like the unit, lightweight, holds a ton of music. However I have been having problems which seem it locks up on me. Doesnt' always want to shut down. The AB mode button won't always work and to play other songs it often won't. I highlight a song to play and it defers back to another album. Not sure if I'm just not navigating it properly but I have read the manual many times for reference. Seems I am doing things correctly. Anyone else have any of these issues?

I had same problem Laura had with navigation. Instructions say to use select or play button. Only the play button uses to select songs. I haven't had locking up problems.

I don't know what brand or model the earbuds are but they suck. If you buy this player you will want to buy another set of headphones.

I have the 1 gig model. The voice recorder is terrible. About a quarter of all the files that is recorded, does not play. The quality of the recorder when it does work is adequate for a lecture in a large hall.

I bought the red Sandisk MP3 Player (256MB) and I think it's great! I was able to easily transfer songs from my PC or MAC very fast using USB 2.0 connection. The player has blue backlit display, FM Radio, Voice Recording and supports Folders (Playlists). One "AAA" Battery seems to last long time.

The only complaints: Memory Capacity (256MB = about 60 songs). Should have gotten the 1GB version. Headphones supplied are bit weak. I bought some Panasonic Over-the-Ear phones that have much better bass.

I also bought Belkin's TuneCast II FM Transmitter to play in the car. Seems to work OK. I do hear some static from the FM Radio but it depends on FM Station selection.

Overall, I've very happy with SanDisk MP3 Player. 256MB isn't bad for working out, but get the larger (512MB / 1GB) if you are using for commutes.

I had the same problem with the unit locking up (when the shuffle function was on). Worked with the support at Sandisk they had me format the unit with FAT32, they recommended putting files into folders on the player if using shuffle.

Does anyone else hear a crackling noise when the title scrolls across the screen? It happens every single time with my 256 version.

Is there a remedy for this, besides my reciept?

I used to have a problem with the unit locking up however I found the way to fix it. Make sure when you transfer file from Windows to the unit, you need to transfer only music file not the hidden file. You need to go to folder options and select show hidden file and folder. After I did that, my unit is working until now. You might wanna try delete all the files from the drive and transfer back with no hidden file. Good luck to you. This player is awsome. The earbud is not bad at all. If you are a serious music listener, you can buy a good one but for me it's sound good.

I think its a great mp3 player I like all the features it has and It was about time I upgraded from my old mp3 player which was only 64mb (Nike psa 64) the only thing I struggled with at first was with the joystick but I soon figured it out. My only complaint is the dam earbuds they suck not only are they uncomfortable also the sound isn't to good either. If your going to buy new earphones I recommend the Sony h.ear clip-on-in-ear headphones model-mdr-j10, and the good part is there only 10 bucks.

ps. I agree Ipods suck especially the new Ipod shuffle

I'm both glad and sad to hear I'm not the only one having problems with this darn thing.

After a lot of research about flash MP3/digital audio players, I settled on the SanDisk SDMX1 1GB Digital Audio Player. It seemed the best value and feature set. I ran to Best Buy this morning to buy it.

I loaded it to capacity with a bunch of music just before heading out on my 5 hour bicycle ride. Just 10 minutes on the road (three songs) and the things locked up. "Hmm?" I thought. I wondered what happened but figure it was a fluke. No big deal, though, I would just turn it off and back on. But I quickly got a bit frustrated when I realized I couldn't power down the unit and had to yank the battery to reset it.

Well, it was a heck of a ride; the strong 15 mile an hour winds made it tough but dealing with the player made it terrible. Every 3-4 songs or so it would lock up. I finally got tired of slowing or stopping to deal with the battery so I just put it on radio about an hour and a half into my ride. A $170 FM radio!

I tried deleting all non-MP3 files, including hidden ones, and that hasn't worked. All my MP3s play in iTunes or Windows Media Player or anywhere else for that matter and they're all 128 or 196kbps so they're not funky.

If you know a solution, please HELP!

UPDATE:

After my locking up problem, I decided to try reformatting the flash drive from FAT to FA32 as suggested here and elsewhere.

What do you know? It worked! I have now been
successfully playing MP3/WMA music for at least 100 songs straight without issue. I'm once again
pleased with my decision

A few more observations:

1. The headphones aren't great. I'm gonna have to buy a set that sits better in my ears, especially for sports-related movement. The sounds is a bit weak (tinny?), too.

2. The shuffle mode is a little too effective. I expect a random song when I moved forward, but the SDMX1 play a random song when you move backward. My expectation is it would go back through the list of songs it played but I guess not. I'll be suggesting the improvement
for a future firmware version.

3. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version (1.02) as soon as I got the player home. I've experienced NO popping or noises as reported by other users. I've got MP3s in several bitrates and also tried unprotected WMAs without problem.

4. Battery life has been great. One AAA and I'm on at least 8 hours. I expect to be using rechargeable NiMH batteries after the included alkaline one wears out.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Again, I thought the iPod Shuffle would be what I was going to buy but it lacks several features you get with the SanDisk player: LCD backlit display, equalizer, drag-and-drop music loading ability, and simply replaceable power (AAA battery, regular or rechargeable). The best things the iPod Shuffle has going for it is the Apple cache and the fact it's integrated directly with iTunes (perhaps a negative since it's dependent on iTunes) and plays iTunes
AAC music. But in my opinion, the SDMX1 is cheaper and better flash player. I just wish SanDisk would do a better job of making sure it performs out of the box and supplying meaningful online support.

I have the 512 MB version and I load songs to it from a Fujitsu Lifebook Series notebook running Windows 2000 Pro. When I try to upload songs to it, my PC will almost always stop the upload and say there is no disk in the drive. When I open up "My Computer" I still see the drive listed, but when I try to click on it, the PC says there is no disk in the drive. I have to disconnect and re-connect the USB cable. Occasionally this causes my entire OS to lock up and I have to power cycle the PC. This is the ONLY thing I've ever encountered that's caused me to have to power cycle a Win2K machine! Anyone know what's going on? Could it be a USB driver issue? I've tried turning off all startup programs via msconfig and that didn't help!

I bought the 512 MB player lasyer last week with my birthday money and I really like it. Only problem is that the WMAs I have on it won't work, only mp3s. If I click on an WMA song it just plays the next mp3 song. What the heck is the problem?

Well my first sandisk froze completely after loading a few mp3z. Nothing would fix it and I had to return it. I decided to give it another try. It was OK but my player does freeze up occasionally, and once froze up my PC. I also had a problem copying files to it. A bunch wouldnt copy, i thought it was a long filename but I ended up having to create another folder and put the rest in there. Overall I'm disappointed.

My first 512 MB Blue SanDisk bit the dust 2 days after the initial 30 day return date that Best Buy has. They did replace it with another one however through a manufacturer warrenty. The initial one I purchased worked quite well as a recorder in a lecture hall. The ear buds were horrible though, and will need to purchase another pair. I did buy the $20.00 2 year replacement guarantee they offered me this time around. I hope I have better luck with this one, especially after reading all of the issues other people have had.

I bought the 256 version and i love it. it holds all my techno songs and playes them without trouble. although i am having some difficulty getting to the settings screen. i got to it once by just pressing random buttons the first night i got it, and now i cant figure out how to get to it. anyone know which buttons your supposed to press/hold to get to it?

P.S. i had the freezing problem a few of you were talking about and i fixed them.

1rst problem was it would freeze at the hourglass when you first load. its because your battery is dead and ther isnt enough power to load the next screen.

2nd problem was it would lock up after one song and none of the buttons would do anything. i solved this by taking all the songs off the player and reloading them, it solved my problem i hope it solves yours ^_^

After updating the firmware to 1.02 I'm having a problem. When selecting folder view, all the song names are corrupt. Where the filenames should be displayed it shows only black bars and spaces. The filenames were displayed okay with the previous .97 firmware. The id3 tags display okay when the mp3 is playing.
I've tried deleting all songs, formatting to FAT
or FAT 32 and still have the same problem.
Also tried reinstalling the firmware again, same problem.
A couple of times, after copying MP3's to the player, when I power it back on it says its updating the firmware ????? I'm sure I didnt copy the firmware .rom file to the player again.
Also displays a message about 'updating text' when this happens, really strange.

I recently purchased the 512mb mp3 player, and I think that it is great. The sound quality is extremely good, and the radio is crystal clear. the only downside to this mp3 player is the joystick. It's a little confusing, and a little too small. But other than that the mp3 player is great. great size, and weight. I've only had it for a few days and I already fit about 50 songs on it. thats pretty good.

I got the 1GB player in February and have never once had it freeze, and I use it almost every day on the bus. I don't use the random mode though. The folders and songs display in the order they are copied to the device, so that's annoying. I use nice headphones with it, and I do hear static in some songs, always in the same places, and i don't hear that static when listening to the same file on my PC or my older player. I think there may be a glitch in processing some particular frequency combination or something. I was hoping to find out what the new firmware actually DOES, but I can't find much info.

How do you play songs in random?

I solved the problem of the player not letting me put the full number of songs i want into the player, even though the player's capacity isnt full. Update the firmware at the website, then format to FAT32 format, or was it 23? Juz rmb its the one with a number. then fill the player with ur songs!

A couple of Pieces of Info that might help.
1. The reason you cant copy loads of files onto the device without formatting to FAT32 or creating directories is because i think that's a limitation of FAT (very old dos) file system.
2. I too have the lock up issue with random and Tech support told me to reformat, will let you know if it freezes.
3. WMA files if DRM protected (check file properties) must have a license file on the device too. The way this file is created is using Windows Media player SYNC or musicmatch portable device. You cant just copy the files over.

Anyway hope that helps.

New Version of the 1GB SD-1024???

A coworker of mine just bought a new 1GB version of the Sandisk MP3 player. I was showing her how to use it and immediately noticed more prompt booting and shutdown. After only a few minutes I didn't notice too much else different, but the firmware was dated 4/29/05 and the model number is SD-1024 RV2. I went straight to the Sandisk website there was no newer version of the firmware (1.02 dated 1/17/05). Does anyone know what's going on here, or where to get this latest firmware? Compatibility with 1024R?

my parents bought me a 1 GB sandisk mp3 player for christmas & i was delighted...until i encounterd several extremely aggravating problems.
1) freezing:although it isnt too much of a problem because it doesny happen all that often & i just pull out the battery to fix it.
2)i am quite confused as to the method used to catagorize the songs on the player. the songs are alphebetical on the computer...which irks me, but they seem to be totally random one they reach the player. i was wondering if there was any way to fix this.
3)like i said b4, i hav a 1 GB mp3 player, but it will only let me use about half of the memory, which completely counteracts the purpose of choosing this system in the 1s place. in order to load more music i need 2 delete some. this makes no sense to me. is there anyone who can help?

Hi I purchased the 1GB Sandisk, how many songs have you been able to load on yours? I changed the format to WMA, it shows 129 songs and roughly 449mb used. Shouldn't it hold alot more, why can't I feel the mp3 player up?

Potential fix for the hourglass startup crash contained herein.

Just got the blue SDMX1-512R v2 model and am happy with it as an alternative to hard drive type players however, after a firmware update the unit did experience a crash where the hourglass stayed on screen at startup... but there was a workaround and fix for this particular "hour glass crash".

After finding that removing and reinserting the battery would shut down the player but would not fix the startup crash I tried this.

1. After shutting down the unit using the battery trick and reinserting the battery but leaving the player off, I plugged it into the USB cable and the computer picked it up and allowed access to the contents (even though the contents could not be seen by the player).

2. I deleted all folders and files except the setings.dat file which originates from the player rather than your computer.

3 Without disconnecting the unit (which would bring back the hour glass crash) I reinstalled the firmware with the format drive option (whatever the default is ? fat or fat32), then disconnected and tested it, then reconnected and reloaded the same folder structure and files, and it has been working fine since.

I had tried this once without deleting the existing files or formatting, and that fixed the crash but the player could still not see the files (although the computer could), and certain letters in the display screens were replaced with generic characters. Seems like the firmware upgrade routine is buggy and had terminated after installing all but the display text. It?s a shame to see such a handy and affordable toy have such problems and hope this helps some folks.

anyone can contact me for instructions or procedures through amragrama@gawab.com

The only weakness I find is: there's no speed control in this RV2 model, alas!

I have a 1 GB version SDMX1-1024R and when I press the play/stop button it brings up the "waiting hourglass" but it doesn't go further, I have no idea what to do, everything seems in place when I took it apart, and I want to see what someone has to say before I take it in thanks! If you email me, please make the subject Sandisk info

I have the SDMX1-512R Model Sandisk. I had the same trouble with the player locking up while playing MP3's. what I found out was that when I first got the player, I updated the firmware (v1.24) and formated the player. when I added songs to it and play them, it would lockup. so what I did was I put the old version firmware (v1.02) and now the player works fine with out any lockups. I think there is something wrong with Sandisk's firmware off the website. Hope this helps some of you with the same lockup problem.

Has anyone successfully gotten an audiobook to play on the SDMX1-512R? I've tried without any luck to get this device to play voice--and it just plain won't. I've downloaded audiobooks from my library and while they "appear" to be loaded onto the device, just scroll the title by, without engaging play. I just joined Audible.com with the same result.
