Secret Santa Gift Swap Goes High-Tech

Posted by Liane Cassavoy | Monday, November 22, 2004 1:13 PM PT

It may not even be Thanksgiving yet, but in my mind, it's never too early to think about Christmas. This year, you can add a modern twist to your annual Secret Santa gift swap. Check out Elfster.com. This site helps organize the entire gift exchange while maintaining secrecy in a high-tech way.

Elfster.com is free (though registration is required). It lets you recruit willing participants, draws names for you, and lets all the participants know who they should be buying a gift for. If you're thinking that you don't need the Web for that, well, you may be right. But Elfster.com does more--it lets you contact your gift recipient and ask anonymous questions, allowing you to find the right gift without revealing your identity.

Elfster.com has additional benefits: the site has sponsors for certain charities. If the organizer of your exchange has selected a favorite charity, and Elfster.com has a sponsor for that charity, the site will arrange to make a small donation. So not only is it easier than ever to swap gifts with your friends and family, you can do a good deed at the same time.

I've created an exchange on this site and everything is going well so far. All the participants are actively using it and it has helped out a lot. Great Site!

Created an exchange today for 100+ people. So far, they love it. Had some problems with cookies, but otherwise, fine.

There is another really cool service just like this called GuessList.com. One really good thing about it is that it has themed exchange pages like e-vite. I just started using it and it works really well. I can even add exclusion rules so that certain people will not get others, i.e. spouses.

My family has been doing this for years on www.DrawNames.com. We set up our group the first year, and now we just rerun the matching program in early November. It made our gift exchange simple, and it used to be a huge mess. The wish lists help a lot because I hate to shop. I just buy online something that my person requests.

Wow, I didn't know that there were so many websites doing this. I decided to go with guesslist.com. It was the most user friendly. The interface was really nice and I liked picking my own theme. It also has wish lists, at least I know I'll get what I want this year.
