Something Toys "R" Us and Amazon are each listing for $279 and with an October 23 ship date. I guess that answers the question "Is Microsoft dropping the Core?" Nope. They're just souping it up a little.

Ars Technica reported in late September that a "new Xbox Core SKU" might replace the current Core system (also priced at $279) and possibly come with the following improvements and add-ins:
- HDMI port
- 256 MB memory card
- Wireless controller
- A disc containing five Xbox LIVE Arcade games (Boom-Boom Rocket, Pac-man, Uno, Feeding Frenzy, and Luxor 2)
HDMI, check (the other versions all have it). Wireless controller, bonus! Disc with five XBLA games? Snooooooze. 256 MB memory card? Drop it, bump the price to $300, and pop a 20 GB hard drive on the side instead. A spindle-less core system might as well be naked as bad as some games perform without one.
Old news, Peckham, where have you been?
Here when the news broke everywhere, not two days after. ;-)
