E3: Special Edition Halo 3 Xbox Unveiled

Lots of Halo news from Microsoft's E3 press conference here in Santa Monica on Tuesday.

First up: the rumored fourth Xbox 360 turns out to be the Halo 3 Special Edition console, due in September 2007. It'll feature the "Spartan green and gold" finish you see pictured, and ship with matching wireless controller, headset, play and charge kit, 20GB hard drive, HDMI-output plus gamer pics and Halo 3 theme available to download from Xbox LIVE. Pricing hasn't been set yet, and strangely, it won't include Halo 3, which is set to ship on September 25th.

In a semi-uncomfortable moment, you could almost hear a pin drop when Xbox boss, Peter Moore, first proudly held up the new khaki console...but he won the crowd back with the final trailer of the evening: some Halo 3 single player action. Check out the above video to see what I mean on both counts!

And speaking of trailers, Microsoft also released this gameplay montage from Halo Wars, the upcoming real-time strategy title from Ensemble Studios, creators of Age of Empires.
