$100 Price Drop for PS3 on July 12?

Forget the 4th, happy 5th of July everyone, a day that's seen Microsoft commit $1 billion to fix its ailing Xbox 360 (see "Microsoft Admits Xbox 360 Failures, Bumps Warranty") and now: reports that the Playstation 3 is finally getting a $100 price cut in exactly one week, next Thursday, July 12. That date also coincides (I'm guessing not coincidentally) with the E3 Media & Business Summit, which runs July 11-13 in Santa Monica.

Treat this news as "possible" and not "absolutely confirmed" since Sony isn't commenting (yet). But according to GameDaily.biz, Circuit City leaked an ad, then a merchandizing manager confirmed it was retail wide, and the date -- July 12 -- with promotional ads to follow beginning Sunday July 15.

Okay, so dropping $600 to $500 is still $100 shy of legitimately competitive, whatever the hype about the PS3 trumping the Xbox 360 power-wise. I don't want sound too sour, but game for game, the 360 versions of multi-platform titles tend to look and perform better on my 1080i HDTV (I'll bother with a 1080p set in, I don't know, a decade or something), Xbox Live is miles better than Sony's de facto service (I'll reevaluate my position when "Home" arrives), except for Final Fantasy, Sony's lost all its significant exclusives, and anecdotally speaking, all my friends and relatives have 360s.

So if this turns out to be true, bravo Sony for taking a small but important step in the right direction, and my condolences on bringing to market a machine you couldn't afford to sell for less than "way too much," but we're still waiting for a killer app and a better reason than "Hey, we're Sony!" to make you console numero uno in our entertainment centers.

One Word: Halo.
Thank you.
Sony has done a good thing by cutting prices, but it still can't compete price wise with the 360 and Wii. Until it comes out with a game or accessory that the 360 (Halo trilogy) or the Wii (Wiimote Controller) can't match, it won't do as well as the other consoles in sales, because it is SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE!!

Is it really more? If you add the price of the hard drive, the HD-DVD Add-On, wireless adapter, 12 month sub to "Live" service and an aftermarket cooler to stop it from burning the house down, I come up with over $850! These are prices from Best Buy and represent what the "average Joe" would pick up. And thats just 12 months for Live.
Looks like the PS3 is a bargain at $599 and a STEAL at $499.

mrplow is an IDIOT! Microsoft is NOT forcing you to buy in to a High Definition video war in which a winner has not been decided yet and may not be for quite some time. The Xbox 360 HD-DVD player is optional; the Playstation Blu-ray is not. The wireless adapter is optional also. Of course if you were to add up all the games, services, wireless adapters, controllers and cameras, I could come up with a $1,500.00 figure easily. But you are going to do the same thing with SONY PLAYSTATION 3! One thing is certain, Xbox 360 is winning big time and there are several reasons for it. First, Microsoft?s console is much cheaper and Xbox Live blows anything that Sony has for an online service out of the water, period. The number of games and the quality of them are way better by far, with the sales numbers to prove it, than any game Sony has put out. "Is it really more?" mrplow asks, Xbox 360= $399.99; Sony Playstation 3= $499.99 so yes, it is $100.00 more.

wow xxtoolxx way to degrade yourself into looking like a 10 year old immature kid. just because you don't want an HD player ok, but with technology building up like it is these days, it won't be long until the market demands for HD. And I myself would rather have a ps3 and pay $100 more for a bluray drive rather than pay $200+ for an HD player or an HD addon to my xbox360. and further more your attitude towards gaming is too narrow minded. YOU may enjoy the luxury of xbox live and fps games like Halo, but do you know that majority of the gaming audience don't play halo or use Xbox live? your argument is one-sided and in all honestly, just immature and pointless. mrplow puts up a much better argument than yours tool. and as smurf said, xbox for boys, ps3 for men. my ps3 makes a much better home entertainment setup than my xbox ever would. and if you are not a fan of halo or live online gaming, a ps3 would be a much more choice if you are looking to invest in one of these consoles.

and xxtoolxx you should do your homework before making a statement like yours next time, xbox 360 currently have more titles because game developers have not yet learned to work with ps3's format, but once they do ps3's quality will be better because it is proven that the power of ps3 can squeeze out a little more juice than the 360 can. Game developers just haven't reached that level to exploit the console yet.

You are right. I am the immature little kid who knows nothing of Playstation 3 problems or Sony Computer Entertainment's "restructuring", and my argument was one sided. I should have just agreed with mrplow's or smurf's nonpartisan point of view. The statements about purchasing an "aftermarket cooler to stop it from burning the house down" and "YOU SUCK... & XBOX SUCKS EVEN MORE.", I mean, how can I argue with that logic!? If I would have done my homework I would have known that the reason Xbox 360 has more games is because of Playstation 3's learning curve and certainly not the year and a half jump that Xbox 360 had on the competition. Man I am DUMB! My momma was right when she said "if ya argue with idiots, ya begin ta sound like em".
