Blockbuster Online Tests In-Store Exchanges

Blockbuster logo scaled.JPGI'm a Netflix holdout. I'm among the last of my group of friends here on the West Coast who hasn't signed up for the DVD-by-mail service. But the problem is, I'm impulsive about movie watching. One night, I'll decide I need to see a certain movie that's just come out on DVD, and then I'll go out and rent it. I know, it's so old-fashioned.

So I'm pretty interested in a new feature that Blockbuster is testing in Colorado Springs and a few other areas. Instead of requiring you to mail your DVD back and await the next one in your queue, you can bring it back to a local store and exchange it right then and there for a new title. No announcements about rolling this plan out nationally, but if they do, I may just take the plunge.

I've used blockbuster for awhile now and always wanted in store return as an option. I tried a few questionable movies in the past and couldn't wait to return them for a better title. This would have made life much easier. Plus you gotta love the no wait for turnaround on your rentals!

As a former Netflix customer, I think the other key advantage that Blockbuster Online offers is the coupon for one free in-store rental per week. Even if you use one a month, that will save you close to $60 a year. I hoping their "coming soon" website upgrade will improve on a clunky interface, though.
