Microsoft: Zune Is the Name of Our Tune

Posted by Emru Townsend | Monday, July 24, 2006 8:24 AM PT

microsoft-zune-logo.jpgIt's official: Microsoft has stepped up to the mic and confirmed the rumours that they're releasing a new media player, and they've even given us a name: Zune.

The Zune project will be more ambitious than just a media player and service because, well, it has to be. That means, eventually, several different players with different capacities and abilities, and a user community -- most likely tied together by the site, and wireless communication between any Zune players that find themselves in close enough proximity.

Interestingly enough, the Zune will not be PlaysForSure compliant, which means that you're pretty much committing to buying music from the Zune music service -- in my opinion, not a smart idea, as the best way to claw up to the iPod market share is by offering more options, not fewer. We'll also see how this affects the other MP3-player makers who threw in with Microsoft's various Windows Media DRM schemes.

What a stupid name for anything. Much more a music player. Apple itunes is better and microsoft hasent even launched a music player-the whole reason anyone got itunes in the first place.

PS Dont pay for your music when you can get it for free. Use limewire!

Hm... a new media player? So how about the Media Player 11? Or Zune is the other name for MP11? Heh, we'll see if Zune is really an iPod killer.

i do agree that microsoft is just trying to jump on the digital music bandwagon, quite late in this circumstance, but the concept is intriguing, if not the name! A new way to share music, wirelessly, from one player to another sounds like a very marketable idea, and i hope that it will be a good player, as the technology behind it should be very good.

The problem with Microsoft is that they never have their own ideas. All they do is copy off s/o else, dominate the market and destroy the original product. And, with the capital backing them no-one can stand up against them.

Zune, rhyming with tune, is a great name. It is easy to remember and cute. It will be a great product. Looking forward to buying one or receiving one as a gift!

And I quote: "What a stupid name for anything. Much more a music player. Apple itunes is better and microsoft hasent even launched a music player-the whole reason anyone got itunes in the first place."

First of all, "please, son."

iTunes? iMac? Apple? You don't even want to get STARTED talking about stupid names. I've yet to come across a SINGLE Apple product without a ridiculously silly name and accompanying branding campaign. Please.

Limewire is a good way to discover and explore new music, but to embrace it as a mentality and have your entire attitude be "never pay for anything" is counter-productive to society, and directly affective on the cumulative quality of any industry it affects. If musicians can't support themselves by making music, they'll be able to devote significantly less time to it, and the quality will suffer directly. If software developers aren't paid for their products, they'll be the result of hobby and sidework, and suffer directly.

Look at Linux vs. Microsoft. PHP vs. ColdFusion. They just cannot compete. The quality is a joke compared to the commercial products. Hobby music, save in the rare extreme case of an extraordinary amalgamation of natural talent and lightning, will NOT be nearly as good as it could be if it had an extra 30 hours a week behind it.

So take your Limewire mantra and chew it.

MacBook? MacBook Pro? .Mac? iWork? iLife?

I always picture an 11 year old down syndrome boy sitting with some crayons and paper and after scribbling out each new Apple product name pronouncing it in slurred, unintelligible speech. It's not his fault, it's Steve Jobs's, for employing him.

"iWaauuurk."

WHo cares what it is called. How does it work. Gimme more than 60GB, dump DRM, support at least 4-5 formats, and make it look good. I can get my music from a dozen online stores, I do not need another site for this.

I bought an IPOD and have always had problems with it. I am also repulsed how Apple mandates you download Itunes with the required Quicktime plugin.

So, I think the key to success will be song management software, the WIRELESS is a great feature (I use my IPOD on my motorcycle with a IR device), and a lower price point.

As a consumer,I want the best product for my money. As it is everything is usally over priced to begin with. So i could careless what it's called, but how well it works and what you get for the price. hopefully they will look at all the other mistakes and improve on them, it's called progress.

Ah, Microsoft. How about you innovate instead of imitate?

You copy the iPod. You copy OS X. Apple is laughing at you.

good luck with Vista - you sure as hell need it.
